POSTAL CONCESSIONS,

The Prime Minister, gavo some interesting figures to an Auckland newspaper on Saturday concerning the Post and Telegraph revenue. Sin Joseph Waed is really a very enthusiastic Postmaster-General. This Department of the State has always been his especial care, and ,10 his enterprise are due a number of innovations in recent years of which the public have received the benefit. Sib Joseph, in reviewing the position as disclosed by the returns for the first ten months of the current financial year, not unnaturally commented on the increase in revenue due to the introduction of penny postage, in which he very properly takes particular pride. The public, however, will probably be most interested in the general results, and so far as these were disclosed they appear very satisfactory. As customary with him., the Prime Minister contented himself with breaking the news only as to the revenue—the expenditure was not mentioned. There was a hint, however, of economies being possible in the future, which rather seems to suggest that not very much has been done in that way during the year now drawing to a close. The promise of concessions in the way of improvement of the services in country districts will be good news to country settlers, and it comes none too soon. The idea of a mail delivery at the door of every farmhouse in the country may be looking rather far ahead, but a great many things.may be done in the way of mail services in country districts which, while not very costly, would mean a great deal to the settlers living there. We trust that Sir Joseph's economies will enable these "concessions" to be put in hand right speedily.
