SIR E. SHACKELTON AND THE KAISER.
Sir Ernest. Shaddeton,..the Antarctic explorer, lectured •privately before the Emperor.,.of.Germany,..:it..ihe. house- of the Colonial Secretary," Herr Dernburg. The Kaiser attended-in naval uniform, and the distinguished, audience of thirtyfive parsons—the , smallest "before which Sir Ernest has- ever'lectured—included, besides Herr Dernbnrg and his wife, Sir Edward Goschen, the British Ambassador, and-most of the staff--of , the Embassy, and other notable members of the Emporor's entourage. Sir Ernest and Lady Shacfcleton were presented'to ■the. Emperor before the lecture, which lasted an hour and . a quarter. The Kaiser followed, the lecture with great interest, and afterwards • when tea was served talked vivaciously for' a quarter of-an hour with Sir Ernest, congratulating him on the "immense benefits rendered to scienec by the expedition." .• ■ •■■-..■■. "The Emperor showed a remarkable grasp of the '• technical side of Antarctic exploration, especially regarding the geological conditions, and. the microscopic ■ life of the South Pole," said Sir 1 Ernest afterwards. . At the two public lectures which the explorer has delivered on this his second visit to Berlin, he was received ' with extraordinary enthusiasm.
