i BUSINESS PEOPLE CHARGED. THE OF SHOP FRONTS. (Before Mr. W. G. Biddoll, S.M.) • A number of business people were charged ' with sweeping dust in front of their shops after 8.30 a.m., in contravention of tho city by-laws. Inspector Doyle, who prosecuted, stated that numerous warnings had been given about this practice through the columns of the press, and otherwise, but without effect, and lie asked that an examplo be made as a deterrent to others. Tho following wero convicted and ordered . to pay 75., court costs:—John H. Adam's, Leslie Boccker, James Lambert, and John T. Millington. Henry Quarterlnan Bruce and Margaret Martin were fined 55., witli 7s. costs, Lewis Chapman was fined 2s. Gd., mid Thomas Patten was convicted and discharged. SOIL FROM A ROAD LINE. Samuel Bray, for removing soil fronj a street situate at Ohiro Bay, ■' running down to the foreshore, pleaded guilty, and! wiis fined J32, with costs' '£&. Ernest.Bray, similarly charged, was fined 20s„ and costs JG2. Mr. O'Sliea, city solicitor, who prosecuted on behalf of tho corporation, said that defendants had been warned on previous occasions, and were liable to a fine of £10. NEFARIOUS RUSE. John 'Wm. Campbell was charged with having: (I) On December 29 last, obtained ono box of tobacco from A. S. Paterson and Co., valued at ,C 5 18?. 2d., by means of false pretences; (2) that on Derember 31 he did obtain from llessrs. W. and O. Turnbnll and Co. one box of tobacco, valued at £5 18s. "2d., by means of falso pretences. , Chief-Dcfcctive Broborg stated that accused rang up these firms ordering tho tobacco, and representing himsolf nj Public .Works foreman at Makanga Say,

Maud Francis, brought up on charges of drunkenness and of being an idle and disorderly person, pleaded not guilty .to the latter charge. The polico evidence adduced was to tho effect that accused was one of the unfortunate class. Accused asked to bo given a chauce, and promised to jjo to a situation. After considering the evidence, his Worship asked accused whether she would go to the Salvation Army Home for six months, and on her replying in the negative, a sentonco of three months' imprisonment was imposed. REMANDED. Joseph Lube, charged with drunkenness and with being an idle and disorderly person, was represented by Mr. Meredith, who applied for a remand till Monday next. The application was granted, bail being fixed at self in J220, and ono surety of .£2O. ■ TREATMENT OP HORSES. Henry Easton was fined 205., with £2 4s. costs,'for illtreating a'horse by riding it while in illhealth and lame. The alternative was fourteen days' imprisonment; Mr. Webb prosecuted on behalf "of tlie S.P.C.A.. Society, and :Mr. Hindmarsh appeared - for - the. defendant. . A similar information against Thomas Michael Easton was. withdrawn', on the ground that Mrs. Easton was the owner of the horse, and was at present away from-Wellington. !" BY-LAW. CASES. Alfred Allan'; charged with riding a bicycle on the. footpath, was convicted and ordered to pay costs 7s. Thomas Reginald Boyes, charged with riding a bicycle' after sunset'without-a light, was convicted and fined 55., with costs 75..' -.- ... . .

Duignan, John Kellcgher,' Frank Pettengill, and William Williams were each fined 55.,, and. costs 75.; Roderick M'Leod was convjcted without penalty; and the information in the ease of Henry Jack vlas dismissed. Mr. T. S. Weston appeared for defendant Welsby, and Mr. Fitzgibbou for .'defendant Allan.. For allowing offensive matter to remain on tliei'r'premises, Edmund Carroll was fined 205., with costs 75.; Thomas S. ISaston, was lined 305., costs 75.; Gallato Bros., 40s.'; and costs. ; 75.; Gob AVing'Bros. and Bernard Rhodes 10s., costs 75.; and Joseph Greenfield 10s., and costs 13s!'. The information against. Itoginald Welsby was dismissed. Mr. T. S. Weston appeared for Greenfield and Welsby. ■ John-Tindle, for , lighting a-firo in-the open 'without special permission, was convicted and fined • 205., and costs'Js. OTHER CASES.. 'Thomas Williams, alias Wilson, alias Frank lioborts, was arraigned on an alleged charge of committing an indecent act at Paekakariki, and rcmaiided till Wednesday next on tho application of tho police. Florence. M'Donald, on a -charge of drunkenness,. and with several previous convictions, was sentenced' to one month's imprisonment., , Samuel and David Hugh M'Diarmid,''prcviously'icouvicted, wero fined 205., with' the . option of seven days' .imprisonment. ' Thomas Lca'ry had a lino ot 10s. imposed on'him, with the option' ot 48 hours' imprisonment. Ada Edwards was fined 55., or 24 hours, and a. first- offendor-.was-convicted and discharged. A LESSON TO OTHERS. It has been a very common practice-in Wellington for drivers of vehicles to pull into the side of streets, but not' sufficiently far enough from tho, tram lines to allow the cars to pass without fear of accident. Time ■ aSid again motormen have had to pull up their cars, and even raiso the, footboard on which passengers alight in order to prevent accidents. .Tho City Council, however, intend to put,, a stop to this, and at the Magistrate's Court ■ yesterday Inspector Doylo prose-, cuted William Talbut in this connection. The magistrate ordered defendant to-pay court costs, amounting to 13s. Mr. Fitzgibbon appeared for defendant, who pleaded guilty; No doubt this caso.will prove a warning to others. ■
