GREYTOWNi The summer show of the Greytown Horticultural and Industrial Society was held' this week, and ■ proved a great success. In previous years Feutherston and Martinborough wero associated with Greytown for this event, but they have now formed distinct societies, and it waa thought that this secession would have a detrimental effect on tho number of exhibits. However, the show well held its own, and Mr. Horton, the judge, remarked. that the standard of quality in the exhibits was extremely good. Produce .was also good. In flowers, too, the show was also very creditable. Mr. ,Al- - of Masterton, scored heavily in fruit, and Mr. M. R. Varnham in flowers. Both these exhibitors are from Masterton. Mr. J. W. M'Cracken and members of his

family secured some two dozen wins in; ■various,'' classes, out of about forty exhibits. Mrs. Haj-e also scored with her pot plants. Mrs. A. B. B. Balfour took prizes for bouquets;'. Mrs. ' Bidwill for vegetables; and l Mr. E. Haigh'for farm produce. Mr. J. H. O'Connor had a capital honey exhibit, consisting of sections; frames, and half-frames of houey, and an observatory hive. The latter caused much interest, as the operations of the bees could be 'plainly seen. In, the evening a large number of visitors were present, the floor and gallery being fairly crowded. RANGATAUA. At a public meeting of the Rangatnua Settlers' Association, held at the Mission Hall, Rangataua, on Thursday night an executive committee consisting of Messrs. Bankart, laing, Rayner, Saunders, Wilson, R. Woofiett, and TeaTbuxy was formed to watch, and to act, in the interests of Bangataua town and village settlements. The road formation now proceeding i was considered satisfactory. I It was decided that a free tourist route to Mount Ruapehu should bo considered when a sum of money was subscribed, and Mr. Snow was engaged to run the most direct line through the bush in continuation of the "Mangateitei Road, the shortest and best route to the summit. Volunteers offered their services to cut a horse-track as the survey proceeds and to erect a hut, the work to proceed at once. The present horsetrack is an excellent one, but in consequence of its running through private property the new track 'through Crown lauds was decided upon! A mountaineering club was started. The population of Bangataua has increased so considerably during the past twelve months that the question of forming a borough is to bo considered by tho committee. FEATHERSTON. Mr. A. C. Holmsi who resided at Featherston for some time and left to "look about tho world" was married at Brora, Sutherland, in Scotland,- on Thursday last to Miss' Melville. Mr. Holms first went to Vancouver and gradually worked across America and so on to Scotland. Ho stayed with his relations in the Highlands for some time. He intends returning to Peatherston,. where he will be heartily welcomed after his three years' absence. The golf clubs are instituting Thursday games for the benefit of those who are unable to get to the links on Saturday. In the second round of tho combined doubles tourney at the tennis courts on Thursday, Aitchison and Miss Toogood~ (S) defeated Gray and Miss Viles (scr.) |by 40—26.
