DEATH OF A VETERAN.
AN INTEEESTING CABEER. Auckland, March L There passed away at the Veterans' Home to-day, at the age of 74, Wm. "Wiggins, formerly of the Koyal Artillery.. \\ T iggins was born at Louth, Ireland, and as a youth was employed for two years on the estate of Mr. H. IX. Kitchener (father of Lord Kitchener, of Khartoum), and soon after enlisted in the East India Company's service. He embarked for India when the Mutiny broke out, and took part ill twenty-six engagements, being present at the storming and taking of Delhi and the capture of tho palace. Ho was Mounded in the right thigh at the siege, anil the wound aftorwards affected his nervous system. Ho was awarded tho Imperial and colonial pensions, and the Mutiny medal, with clasp for Delhi. Deceased was proud of relating how he had frequently carricd Lord Kitchener about in his anus when the Field-Marshal was a child, and arrangements had betn made for tho introduction of tho veteran, to Lord Kitchener, but unfortunately deceased's mind bocaine so clouded that lie could not have recognised the son of his former omployer. The remains are to be interred with military honours.
