TWO SCHOOLS FOE THE MAEIST BEOTHBES, '
The population of Wellington ,is mov ing out from the centre of the city as the urgency for business sites becomes' more acute. It is for this reason that 'the Marist Brothers,'who "have so long and successfully" conducted a school in Bonlcott Street, intend: to''remove- the' scene ,of their ■ activities to- - residential quarters-of the city. .To replace the Boulcott Street School—authority, for the disposal of which 'property has been obtained from Parliament—two schools are to be erected, one in Tasman Street and the other in.'Hawkestone Street (Thorndon). Th school in-Tasman Street is:.to be erected on a block'. of' land at' the" rear of the site of the old tramway sheds in Adelaide Eoad, which runs through to Tasman Street. ' 'It will be'- a one : story brick building, with a frontage on the northern side of 103 ft. by a depth of 60ft. It will contain six olass-rooms, calculated to accommodate about 300 scholars. -Thesloping ground-will, permit of the provision of a large and airy basement (60ft. by 24ft), which will be used as a shelter shed m bad weather. The exterior brick walls of the school will be relieved with cement facings, and a tiny belfry will relieve the sky-line. The Thorndon Marist Brothers' School is to be erected on a. large section of ground situated between the property of Mrs. Grace and Hawkestone Terrace (on the northern side of. Hawkestone Street) The'building will present a frontage to Hawkestone Street of 80ft., and will have a depth of '92ft. It will contain four large class-rooms oh the'ground-floor, and apartments for the Brothers upstairs. As in the case'of the Tasman Street School, there will bo a large basement for sholter purposes. The plans for both schools have been prepared by Mr. John S. Swan, tho Lambton Quay architect • A CITY STRTJCTUEE, The same architect has prepared plans for the erection of a large three-story brick structure,: with shop frontages, to displace tho old building (for years occupied as a Chinese fruit shop), at tho corner of Manners and Herbert Streets This building will cover n block of land of irregular dimensions, having a frontage to Manners Street -of 23ft, which widens out to 68ft. sin. behind, the depth ottho land hoing 56ft. 3iu. The building will bo finished in red brick and "cqmpo " with cement facings, and mil have 'a cantilever verandah on the street frontages. Celter accommodation will be provided below.. .
NEW CONVENT FOR WANGANUI. Mr. 'Swan has also been instructed to prepare plans for a new convent, to be erected at Wanganui, for tho Sisters of St. Joseph. It will be a large three-storv brick edifice, as large as the Island Bay Convent, and will bo erected on a section having frontages to Guyton and Campbell Streets, and Cameron Terrace. It will contain accommodation for 60 .boarders, and 15 of the community.
