, — -0- —.— . _ Matters in'connection with the' Musical Competitions' Society have progressed considerably. At a meeting.of the comnnttee held on Wednesday night the pro-gramme-was definitely settled and prizemoney totalling over JD2O9 was allotted, , Mr. ..-.Sidney Wolf.- the ' well-known musician of Dunedin, has bejn appointed to judge the instrumental and''vocal items, and Mr. J. I'V Montague, of the'' Auckland Shakespearean Society, Trill judge the elocutionary items. Mr. C.'N. JBaeye-rta, in conjunction with the judges; has consented to choose the vocal and instrumental items for competitions, while Mr. Wolf will set the instrumental items and test pieces for the choirs. On account of the possibility of thero being difficulty in getting the necessary music by August,-it was r.greed that'the first competitions be held about the first 1 week in October, the final date is to be fixed at the 'next .'meeting.....-.The programme and book o£ words is now in course of preparation, and should be ready for issue -toward the end. of the month. While in Auckland Mr. Talbot met members of the executive of the recentlyformed Auckland Society', whose competitions are to fco held in November. Great enthusiasm is being shown in the northern city, and the society is being strongly supported by tho business, community. It appears almost certain that several of the best amateurs in Auckland will come to Wellington, to compete. One of the prizes at Auckland is a fifty-five guinea piano donated ..by the London Piano Company, which is open for competition to professionals .or amateurs throughout tho Dominion, and ttie northern executive expect to. attract entrants from all the other centres.-..
