_ $ CROSSING OR DEATH TRAP? (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Wanganui, March 1. Beantification of the Virginia Lake reserve on St. John's Hill, is now being taken in hand. It is intended for the present only to put a roadway half way round the lake, leaving the completion of. tho carriage drive to some future date. Mr. Boyd, proprietor of the Aramoho Zoo, lctt lor Wellington to-day to interview the Government regarding its refusal (0 allow tho lauding of the shipment of animals now in Sydney. Dr. J'orritt, his son and tho latter's nurse had a marvellous escape from death on Monday evening, when their motorcar collided with a train on tho Guytnn Street crossing. The boy was thrown clear and escaped unhurt, and Dr. i'orritt and the girl got off with cuts and bruises. The crossing is 11 particular,}' dangerous one. A great deal of traffic goes over it, hut a 10ft. fence, and a combination of houses, trees, and a deep cutting completely hide the approach of trains. Narrow escapes at tho spot have been reported more than once. Tho Borough Council some time back asked the Railway Department lo havo the level of the line lowered, and the road carried across it by an overhead bridge, and Monday night's occurrence- will probably lead to a renewal of the request. The Band Contest Committee has been informed by tho Railway Deparbnent that a train will be delayed to suit the committee's arrangements, and excursion tickets granted for the contest, beginning on March 11. The local rowing centre is arranging to give a suitable reception to the Union crew on their return from tho Hobart regatta. Mr. C. F. Gieson has resigned his seat on the Gonville-Castlccliff Tramway Board.
