MARKSMEN AT-PAPAWAI. THE WAIRARAPA, MEETING.. Beautiful ■ weather "prevailed for the Opening of the' eighteenth" annual prize meeting of the Wairarapa Rifle Association at Papawai Range, Groytown, on Monday. The '. number of competitors present was 66, the attendance being as good, if not; better, than that of the previous year. Coming immediately prior to the riflemen's annual carnival at Trentham—on Friday—the Papawai meeting is .annually visited by noted marksmen ' Mrom various, centres of the Dominion, tho practice gained at the.smaller event a useful preliminary to the NewZealand championship . contests. Among the visitors were three previous winners of the New Zealand. Rifle championship—Lieutenant Irvine, of Nelson, and' Riflemen R. J. King and G.' Hyde, of'the Opaki Club. There'' were also several shooting men from Wellington, small parties from Gore, Thames, and the Sounds districts, and. an Australian marksman... When the targets were turned down the third match of the champiouship series, was in progress, Kummer, of Te Wharau, having a load for cha'mpionship .-honours by a single point, his aggregate score being 127. Following him were • Lieutenant , Shanks, Rifleman E. E. Vennell, Sergeant James, and Rifleman. W,' P. Henderson, with 126 points each. SECOND DAY'S SHOOTING. ' KTnvjMER CHAMPION. Firing was resumed yesterday morning, Hio. prevailing conditions- being a bright light and:a-tricky.wind. The championship matches were proceeded with and resulted: in a ■■win,, by three points, for Rifleman Kummer, of Te Wharau, his aggregate*score being. 281; The runnerup was Sergeant.Jones, of Napier, with 278 points. Kummer, of Te Wharau (score 156), who also received a gold-medal-. Mr. G. Walden, of Greytown, who won the cup twice in succession and twice at' intervals, presented the trophy to ..tho association for annual competition. The Buchanan' Cup and gold medal, awarded by Mr. W. C. Buchanan, M.P., to.the highest aggregate scorer—being resident within, the electoral districts of Mastereton and'Wairarapa—in matches 1!; 3, and 4 of the championship series, was won by Rifleman E..E; Vennell,-of .Te Wharau, with an aggregate score of '170, hi 6 club mate, Rifleman Kummer,'being a close second,-with 169. ' Kummer, who was having a regular field day, won the Rivers'' Challenge Gup,presented for competition by Mr. J. 1), Rivers, of Hastings,, and awarded to the highest aggregate scorer in all contests at 700,- 800, and 900 yards. His score was 158.
