PARCELS POST.
NEW . SYSTEM ADOPTED. As from. yesterday a new parcels post system came into operation throughout the Dominion. The idea is a German one, though.it. is not known if it is.of German origin, as .it is the system in almost genera] use'on the Continent. The system is simplicity itself as ; far as the public is concerned, and is one that will relieve the parcels post staffs, of. a good deal .of labour. On dispatching a parcel now, tho sender is asked to fill in a card with the address of the person for whom the parcel is • intended, and his own address. On payment for the stamps required to send the parcel a "sticker" bearing a number is affixed on a space left for the purpose on the card, and the corresponding number is attached to the parcel. The card is then forwarded by the authorities to the postmaster at the . other end, and remains there until the parcel is claimed. Hitherto, the system has bean to make out a separate list of parcels for each place, which entailed a great deal of clerical work now happily dispensed'with. It is not considered that the adoption of the new system will necessitate- the cutting down of- parcel-post staffs owin» to the rapidity with which this branch of the postal business is growing. The new system is the outcome of observations made by the secretary of the Department (Mr. D. Robertson) during his recent trip Home.
