' CANDIDATES ENTERTAINED. The four candidates . for the Rhodes Scholarship were entertained by tho Victoria College students at.'a .supper in the gymnasium, last evening; Mr. I'. A. Wilson, • president of. the association, was in the chair, and the Professorial Board was .well represented. Mr. J. M. Hogben proposed, the toast, of. the "New Zealand University," to which Mr. J. , W. Joynt, Registrar of the University, responded. The toast of "The Easter Teams" was proposed by Mr. S.'F. Dizon, ami replied to bjvMr. J. .1 , .' Thompson. . "Absent., Friends;'more especially previous Ehodes Scholars:-and ..Candidates" was ( .proposed by ' Professor • Brown. The Ehodes scholar who should be elected today, said Professor Brown, wi>old join a band/of." very admirable predecessors. He .doubted very much if any other British colony with so small a- population could point to so many distinguished winners: of the scholarship as New Zealand. In reviewing the snecesses-of previous Rhodes scholars,, the'professor, .staied that the first one, Mr. Thomson, is .now engaged in a course of work in West Australia, Dr. Robertson is a professor at Rangoon, and the. other four are still .pursuing their course at Oxford. The new Rhodes scholar, would have opportunities at Oxford which ought to be generally envied. Many hard thing 6 were said about Oxford by people who ..knew nothing about it. Oxford did ''not'-require '-'credentials or testimonials from anyone, though the testimonial given it by Rhodes—man of action and not connection with this scholarship was one of which even Oxford might bo proud. ,
