IRISH KILTS AND PIPES.
! Sir,—ln your leader columns of I February. 25 there appears a paragraph on the abeye. I was amused at the statements it contained. We have often heard of the proyerWal Irishman with his coat-tails trailing on the ground and inviting anyone to tread on them, but I have never heard of -an Irishman spreading-out-his kilts for that purpose. But what amused me so much-was the proposed Irish pipe band. I.have seen the Irish pipes, and they are 60 very different to th« .Scottish "that a band of thorn would be veTy amusfng; Tho. Irish pipes are not blown.with the mouth, as the Scottish "pipes are, "they are blown with a sort ::of bellows, held, below: or. under tho arm, and ■ the' instrument that tho notes are. played upon .is -rested on the knee, wliioh has- a:strap of leather round it, so.it will be. seen "that anyone playing these pipes has- to stand. It would to comical to see. a band of these pipes. Whenever they wished to commence to play they would havo to halt.' Of course there may bo other Irish pipes; those are the only ones that I hive seen. Perhaps some of your Irish correspondents will be able to tell us, all about them. Personally, I should think that the Irish have a very good and very ancient instrument of music, and if we believe Scripture the instrument of heaven, namely, the harp.—l am, etc.,, . ' . ' THOS! M. MILLIGAN. Taitville, February, 28, 1910. "■■. : '•
