MUNICIPAL PLAY - DAY.
STAPH PICNIC. Tie routine of dog taxes, complaints about drains, and similar matters common to • corporation employees, was abandoned yesterday,, whan the Town Hall was - closed for the annual picnio of the corporation staff. The gathering -was, held at Wonderland, and was largely attonded, the heads of the . various branches of tho eervice and several City Councillors being amongst the merry-makers Tho principal attraction was ! the sports programme, which was got off on the pony racecourse. Several of the. competitors showed a willing spirit, although' obviously "short of a gallop," but there were also some really capable performers, notably K. E. Luke, who won the aggregate'oup by seouring first place in both the 100 yards and tho 440 yards races, J. H. Stubbs, J. M'Bean, W. Bock, and L' Bridge., The officials controlling the'sports were:—Starter, Mr/ J. B. Paton; handicappers, Messrs. ' P. M'Coll, J. B. Paton; and.A. Lafferty; and hon. secretary, Mr. J.. M'Bean. The younthful ;.membtcrs of the' party, and alro a goodly number of the seniors, mado good use of the water-chute, toboggan, etc., and everyone 'roamed at' their sweet'will over the; grotinds;: and for the time throw care to . the four winds. ■ The results,of the varjous races were:— ' 100 ; Yards Handicap.—K. E. Luke, 10yds., 1; J. H. Stubbs,. scr'., 2; J. M'Bean, Syds., 3. A Hose finish, Luke having only about a foot to spare. ' ■ 220 Yards Handicap.—j. M'Bean, Byds., 1; L. N. Taylor. 20yas.. 2; J. H. Stubbs, scr., 3. Won by. less than a foot, with tho third man a couple of inches further back. 100 Yards. Handicap.—K. E. Luke, 85yds.,. lj J; H. Stubbs, syds., 2; J. M'Bean, ser., 3; Tho winner had a couple of yards' to- spare when he .breasted the tape, and two yards soparated second and third. • .V- ' • Ladies' Eaco, -25yds.—Mrs. Eiohoids, I;' Mrs. Hoy, 2; Mrs.- Curtis, 3. Paton dashed out from the barrier with a flying start, and just held on long enough to win from Lauchlan by a couple , of • inoliea..; ; Second Ladies': ;Eaoe, 25yds,—Mrs. Curtis, 1; Mrs. Casey,-2; Mies Howorth, 3. Three-legged Kace.—L. Bridge' and G. Wilkinson, 1;: W.- Bock and Player, 2. Mile' Handicap.—J; H. Stubbs, scr.; 1; W. Bock, 90yds,,' 2; L. : Bridge, 10yds.; 3. Coming up the straight to the tape Bock appeared to have enoiigh in hand to stall off an attack by Stubbs, who was running strong,. but just ■ about.• 10' yards from hoine the scratoh man was.: within striking distance. _ Both .men; sprinted homo, Stubbs winning on the tape, after an; excellent finish.:.' Bridge was about five yards away third. -
