Newman,.. does , not. intend to seek re : election. when his' term of. office expires in May next: Dr. Newman' informed a representative of: The Dominion yestcr-,' day that it : is "his intention to leave" on a vjsit to England soon, after his Mayoral duties are completed, and 'the trip will probably extend to. Christmas ~timo.; It is:, about 13 years since.. Dr.-; Newman' visited, the Old' Country,, and. his. forth-, coming, trip.will he partly one.qf pleasure although business will also enter largely, into it,'as his"-Worship" has some private affairs of considerable-importance to attend to. .:For-somo considerable time past ,Dr. Newman': has been engaged in researches' as. to the' origin of the Maori, with .'the intention of publishng'-.' a book, oh the subject..; The greater'• part of. the work has been ['completed, hut Dr. Newman intends", during his tour, to study, old material .in the .British Museum and' other libraries and museums, in England.- He will also visit various' museums in-.Holland. The Maoris' came through Java from' India, and a large number.of idols:.and carvings .from Java arid kindred . places ; have' been; collected and., sent to the Dutch . museums.: Dr. Newman may: return to New .Zealand, via. .India: and Java, and he-expects to. publish his.work soon after.his,return to this. country.. ■'. ~.-':, .--,..
