■-■■; NOTES .ON;THE' , RACING.' ■'. • :. ,;; (By Tolcgraph.-Special i Correspondent.) ; .' .. New Plymouth, February 16. „ A very/Warm favourite, Maggie Paul, prevailed in the vHaclc Hurdles, and, as ■was only. to .be expected after her Haivera running, .she paid;a' very:.small price. The [■ Porirua-oivned' Wnione wae made second favourite and; ho finished next to the winner.' Flying' Cloud; was showing tho way when the field settled .'down, and; with Hoango,' made;the' pace a: very smart one. , .'With four furlongs:to' go the favourite put'a'.decided gap-betiveen-'her- , self and' the'<field; and- from thence onwards,'waa not troubled. :\Vaioneistayed' on best of t!;e others," and filled secondplace 'just-ahead of Prophet., , :,: :■<■■ Hohungatahi." was "made; 'a ; very prorioiinced"fdvoUrite. in tho Stewards'" Handicap, whije Kareroa also had a few-sup-porters, but tho others-went .unbacked The favourite,, with Tarina .'and Kareroa, began , smartly, , and the three ran , abreast to. the first turn, where Tarina got. her neck .in. front..Hohungacahi seemed to in'eko trouble 'round the turn 3,' and lie ■.iras." beaten at' • the' straight ■ : entrance. Kareroa. then challenged Tai-ina, but -the latter "lasted , long enough' to win by a head. . Waiata headed the l'avouritu in the last, stride'for'third place.; ; ••*'; 'Redwing; iWas. quickly in front- at the start of ■ thij Timar-.i jiandicap, and she maintained, that, position to the finish. Kanewara, who was ridden by C.Jenkinsiwas her nearest attendant throughout,, butishe failed .to head her. , Toauga; who was favourite,: got away, badly, and afterwards seemed '•:< to ; ba in trouble in negotiating 'the turns. - The Auoklando.wned :. Zinnia was another well-backed mount which failed to show ' Lady Medallist .was;the'elect of the backers in the Cup, and she won, rathqr comfortably by a -length- from Uhlando, -with thr«a horses in" a line next. The start was delayed by the; vagaries of Waitapn, who repeatedly broko ' through the tapes. -At the barrier '■ riso■ Mendip ; and 1 Sa.ndstream'were'badly ieft, and Lady Medallist, with Chase Slab, took up the running. Passing the stand, Chase Mab was: a'clear len»th. in'-.front; with 'Lady Medallist arid Cdromahdol next. Down the back the last-named reached tho front, and led to "the bottom bond, where Jenkins rushed, Lady. Medallist through. It,-'was there that the race was won, as she got a four-lengths' break on the field Uhlando then came at the favourite, but; though he was very hard, ridden, he could not reach the. Porirua mare, who won by a couple of lengths. Waitapu, Mendip and Coromandel finished in a line. Swimming Belt. showed ■ a glimpse of his best form in tho First AVelter Handicap which he won after getting a bad run hi tho early ;pavt of the -race. Cyrene was in tho van from: the barrier rise, .but he had to give way. irithe straight to the favourite, who put in a strong run, and wore down tjhe field. . Perolina gave a disappointing display, and Astraea was tailed on the.wholo.way. ' . ■• ' Scratohihgs' in tho'Okato Hack 'reduced the field to five runners. Paul arid Highdon wore evenly backed, and then came 1 Research. Higliden made the early run-' ning, but Paul was always handy, and down the back stretch ho went to tho

front. At the home turn Silva had his measure, and he came on alone, winning comfortably by a couplo of lengths. Hesearch was tailed off in the early part of the race,' but ho finished well; and just failed-to head Paul for second place. On Hawera form, it was only to be expected that Clemora would start a decided iavounto in the Flying Handicap, and so it proved. Golden Eagle, with Jenkins in the saddle, gave trouble at the barrier, ■ and.delayed the.start for several minutes.liventually she got out first, and at one hme had- a lead of five lengths, but Clemora settled down to his work , in good stylo, and in an interesting duel up.the straight, he caught and passed ■ Golden liagle, and won nicely. The win -was rt vory..-popular one, and horse and rider wero loudly cheered on returning to wcighin. ■ ; •■■••.

The betting'market in the last race foreshadowed that Emblem would win. The only other candidates-supported were Prancer and St. Kildare. The favourite began smartly, and was , never headed. Nukuhau was an indifferent secondhand St. Tarra was third. The winner is a Good-looking filly by Field Battery, from Vapour, and is owned by a well-known Hawera sportsman, who, however, was not present to see his filly win. • i .
