BRILLIANT DISPLAY. . ~ The flower-show.which was opened yesterday afternoon-, in 'the : Drill- Hall-.-at the Hutt .'deserved :■ much more' patrohago from.-the public ..than, it received, yfor though the competitive classes- for"'flowers were ! .riot .so strong "as they have been,' there were several magnificent:' exhibits sent, in .for, exhibition .only,;and these' made the whole. scene, .very brilliant 'and offeetive.': Lady Ward, who'-declared the show open; 'was presented ;with'' : 'a , -',ver,T handsome/shower, bouquet,; of roses .'in all shades, tied with.'rose-pink streamers. Of all the -.exhibits;, the finest..was ;Mr. Chapman's display of-.begonias 'and :pot plants. Some !of'the begonia blooms were magnificent, and he exhibited'• two quite new-varieties, one/snow/white "Purity," and the other,- a 'golden, yellow; known -as ."Mrs.'./W.'_ L. Amelie.". .-These flowers had exquisite waved, , petals, and ■ were perfect blooms.. Among, the. curious plants shown.were two handsome foliage plants, allocassia metallica, with;,huge metallic /leaves . like'■-;highly-burnished ;of beaten coDper, and. a Peruvian maidenhair,'.incredibly coarse. , for a fern, of that''variety, . and ;. a very'* , handsome Chinese 'potato plant,' which possesses 'an edible root,..'and. leaves most; .beautifully shaped, marked, 1 and ■ coloured. Next in interest .came 'Mr. S. Knight's fine collection. ..of maidenhair,, for which he was awarded .certificate, as was Mr. Chap-man-for his. •''Mγ: .Cooper-jflso sent an excellent and varied collection of foliage, flowery 'plants, and blooms, artistically arranged, and: Mr. -Poble' exhibited a' collection' of; New ..Zealand ferns.: In the competitive classes , the cactus.dahlias "•nade -the strongest show, and'.Mrs: N: ■C.'. Smith's exhibit of twelve blooms was perhaps the', best: in, the. show. ~ Her. fine Jurple dahlia , "Nelson". won the prize .for the i champion • bloom. , There: were .aled Some fine asters, : . and an exhibit of sweet peas,that,: considering the. latene6s : of the Season, ,was yei-y, good. ; Among- the, fruit ■exhibits the finest were, the great bunches, ■jf grapes,., purple'.and amber' coloured, jut in , number: of'entries the fruit could lot. compare with .the-vegetables..-' 'Seen' at-a show, vegetables .-have'a-charin that they, do • not possess even on the .table. Only .the';finest are .selected,: and-one! sees these ;monster - potatoes, -. toma,toes, and:, cabbages''washed,;,and 'brushed to'.'.a-degree- that'.mates them"suggest' oV lioiousness far:. beyond. one's. dull. experience, and-make one feel forever.- , dissatisfied: with', the'normal .vegetables produced next /morning .'.from "John's".
