Hugo paid a- visit to, Petone last night for the purpose.:ofiinspecting the-local brigade.■;; Tho members of the Fire Board were also-present. - The first trial rim .was with, the horse, hose, aiid ladder; cart, just, lately installed at :the station. The inspector then divided tho brigade.into.four':squads-'of : f°"r ! neu f° r the purpose of an exhibition', with the hand hose and ladder cart; A trial of coupling and erecting ladders was .also given... h 11: the w.ork : was carried out without the assistance of the brigade's officers,; at Inspector Hugo's wish. After the trials the inspector' briefly 'addressed tho . men, • remarking that though -they were a trifle over-anxious, their work was done; well, npd that.ho did not expect volunteers to be as. efficient as permanent men.; , -'■'.''' ''.'. HUTT : 'RIVER BOARD.;•■''■ ■The usual meeting of tho Hutt River Board was hold last night in the.board's office. Members; present•; were: Messrs. Robert, Stevens (chairman), -.Pinny, and Pcterkin.-In;the absence of the foreman' the ganger-presented the following; report :—At; Jorgenson's bend one turpentine pile -had been driven■' to strengthen tho breastwork and. tho river vbank. The tarring, of punts;, boats, .flood valves,, retaining walls, and tho iron work of lower dam had been completed. Thirteen loads of. scrub -had Jieen -supplied.--by: the..Borough' Council, /and-packed, in the breastwork at the top of Gear Island..;At the breastwork. at Jones's. camp,. eight loads of scrub had been "put in. Good, progress is.being made with thesnagging operations and the cutting of logs in the bed of the river. .Three;small freshes were reported, but no damage was • done,' an examination showihj.that ~tho; protective works were, in excellent condition.,.'
