MR. MERRIMAN'S VIEW. LONDON MONEY POWER BEHIND THE PROGRESSIVES. V OPPOSED TO COALITION. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright, (Rec. February 7, 9.30 p.m.) London, February 7. The Cape Town correspondent of the "Daily Mail" reports that General Botha (Premier of- the- Transvaal)/ General J. C. .Simits (Colonial Secretary ,of the Transvaal), and Dr. Jameson (Leader of the Cape Colony Progressives) are willing to assiiit to form a non-party Government to inaugurato the Union of South Africa, but Mr.,Merriman (Premier of Cape Colony) has detached the Cape Bond leaders 'from the coalition movement.
South Africa and Throgmorton Street. Mr. Merriman, speaking at Worcester after a consultation with' General Botha, who is at Capo Town, advised the Progressives to get out of their little cockboat coalition idea, which has emanated from Throgmorton Street, the London money centre.
Referring to the need of a strong Opposition'rather than a compromise Government; of all the parties, Mr. Merriman said that the Government; of the Union would' need; all possible. criticism. The South African party embraced national ifeeling in a broad way. - It looked forward to managing its own affairs without interference. He added:
"My idea of a Progressive is a man who is fond of .borrowing, who wants to imitate Australia, who admires tho Imperial South : African Association—which we loathol—who has one eye on South Africa and tho other on tie English Stock Exchange."- . -
Dutch political Bodies;
i Mr. Merriman ,depre<»ted an amalgamation of the Afrikander Bond, the Orangia Unie, and the Hot Volk (which are the 'Dutch political associations in Cape Colony,' the "Orange -River. .Colony,, and the Transvaal respectively), but said that the ;.three might' constitute , a united South African party, which he :■ hoped would be the dominating party of ; the futuro. .--
