MEREDITH'S POSTHUMOUS NOVEL.
•■■'A new 'work from'• the'pen' of George Meredith; would' be a' literary ■■■ event iof the first importance, even /were tho great novelist still alive and active. Now that, 'his: lost words have been written,/ the announcement that a posthumous novel, "Celt and Saxon," is, to'• appear immediately, 'will; awaken widespread interest. "Celt and' Saxon" will bo published, in the first instance, in "The .Fortnightly Eevieiv." The editor' of that journal, Mr. ■W. L.. Courtney; informed a '"Daily News" representative that. the.first chapters of. tno novel' will appear', in r tho January "Fortnightly," , and . that .the book willrnn through some eight months. '"George.Meredith.has left several pieces of work, but "Celt .and ' Saxon' is tho longest and most complete," Mr..Courtney, explained. /"Although .it is unfinished, it is. not difficult:to forecast the conclusion which the author had in mind. I do •' not propose, however, to ask even Mr. Maurice Hewlett to continue, it, .as I .think"it is far better, to present- it as it was left by the hand of the master. I only : mention Mr. Maurice Hewlett here as a sort of natural disciple of the Meredithiah School, just.' as. 'Q\.was one of the school' of. Bobcrt Louis •■ Stevenson. If you remember, 'Q' completed 'St. Ives/ the .unfinished novel of : Stevenson. Of course/' added Mr.- Courtney, "it"would bo- impossible for me to give away the plot of ,the story."; : ;|-.''.'.'■!. ..-...•. '■!.■' ;•'"
