• .——4— —-'. This afternoon at tho Basin'Reservo the provincial athletic ..'championships will be decided. If the weather keeps fine the' public will sco interesting sports. AU-the details, are ready and:the competitors are in '• good form, so everything should go off without a hitch.- It is to bo regretted that Harding, of Napier, of whom wd have heard so much, will bo unable to compete as ho is., suffering from a severe cold on the'chest. Woodger is in tip-top form and should win the 100 aucf 220 yards championships, though Duncan, Hubbard, and Wilton are all very fit. J. Wilton and J. F. Wilson will probably fight out tho quarter mile between them. All tho competitors in this event aro running well and a fast race is expected. Wilson'.will also, probably win tho half-mile championship as ho is, without doubt, in' grand form at .present. Tho milo flat will probably produce the most, exciting race of tho day as ; Heffor'>and .Frank Wilton are very anxious to meet again and thero are also H. J. Pollock; Bernard, Baxter, and Harrv Thompson, tho Marathon winner. The 'field events havo attracted numerous entries and L. MTxay, Cartvright, of Woodville, and Anderson should show good form.' L. ; ,M'Kay will givo an exhibition of pole-vaulting, an event which is very popular with the public. Ked- - dell,'of Wanganui, is competing in tho hurdle events and jumps, and has a very, pleasing: stylo. . Fitzgerald should win both walking events, nis most formidable opponents being Leslie and Cashman; Tho secretary has been informed that Hackenscbmidt and, his party, will be present, during the afternoon.. Tho Petone Brass: Band has been engaged to play selections and will march through the.streets from the station.
