K.. ,Macdonald' and .C 0.,.: on Tuesday afternoon>■ next,; at 2.30 o'clock";. The pictures which now brighten .the walls of;the firm's big anction mart,on'Lambton Quay, are a fine lot. The predominating feature of. the show—is is really an'art exhibition in miniature—is the finecollec-: tiou of paslels by Mr. J. Douglas. Perrett, of, Auckland,-whoso work is well and favourably known in. Wellington. ■ Mr. Perrett has recently returned, from a sketching lour of the Cold Lakes'.' "and '•■ West Coast. Sounds, and his, tour can almost' be"-traced in the, scenic pastels thai bedeck the walls of the mart.: He was; a passenger" on "the ill-fated Waikare,, whenske.,was.wrecked at Dusky,Sound,.arid had the misfortune to lose a number of his sketches.'but such'is the-scope for the artist iri western arid upland Otago .that Mr. ! Perrett could, not fail to secure many delightful bits, of lake, mountain, and fiord, scenery,' which have been transferred .to the, canvas (idealised, perhaps, a' little). "by 'Hi'.' Perrett,- but nicely reminiscent .'of .nature, in her. .tenderest moods.'- '.:;,
One. of the most, likeable canvases (49) is ."Reflections,. Dart' Valley," which is a fine broad conception of a river-washed valley:narrowing into a range.'of isharppeaked mountains still eapped-'with winter's glory'.' The light conies'.from behind tUo" kills and throws woiidrous opalescent shadows, athwart the''water.;' The pastel is in;.Perretfs best style,-and should, easily find a'buyer';' Another'fine.'pastel is (36) '.'-Tit'. Coofc:from iL'ake' Pukaki," a -study' ; ■n varying violet shades, with the soaring ridge of Mount Cook throwing an .encompassing .shadow, across, the lake.. -A: picture into which.the artist has thrown; much* delicate feeling., is "The'- Roseate' Hues of Early Morn"—a hushed.countryside. 1 with the clean-winged dawn stealling, .rosily: from:: behind. ■ '. One; ( ,ofn..tha. most-'desirable'of the. smaller/pastels:., is (37) "Gearing After -Rain,/;Wet'Jackef Arm," ia well-balanced picture .with'the flaming-flowered rata on the one side, and across..the sound, the eternal, mountains veiled in clinging; mists; .-'Evening, Mil-, ford Sound," is another gem—a placid' lake-like scene,, all * ■ violets .and purples with the:atmospheric charm of eventide. In quite, another vein are a couple wbf, sketches in, oils' : of ■■ Island, : ; Bay—lively blue sea,"breaking.into.white over jagged; rocks, that snarl, in; the "ocean's smother. There is life and;movement .in /-these - sketches indicate "a "pleasing 1 diversity.of style. ' "The Red.Roofs: of'Wei-/ lington" :is-d'rio.ther' little sketch of:a. bit/ of our harbour, showing .beyond ;roofs'->a little, too/glowing: -in. their: redness. "Evening, Lake Te -Anau,".' "Lake. -Ada," and : "Ohinemutu,. . There are other -artists: 'represented ..in the little /show, at; Macdonald: and. Co.'.s: "rooms.' It'was yrith ! pleased .surprise that'' I noticed,'a. sketch,by Nerli,, the-Italian artist, :who .was in-Sydney for;some time,: and - paid a. visit to'. New Zealand^ ■■..-- The sketch is, that of 'a.-girl 'in pink, "taking"', her', dolce ' far.' niente ; . >vith : delightful abandon. By a happy inspiration-,Mr. ■ •Perrett. hasi placed, beside: the -sketch:-.a.- ' photograph of Nerli's"painting -of -Robert Louis' Stevenson,' painted' during a'visit: the artist .paid..to -.'Apia' (Samoa).; The Dairiting.v. was .exhibited - for:' sale by.Nerli'.'in.'.Wellington, and:was'.bought, for about 40 guineas by Mrs:, Turnbull/ of/Edinburgh.
