Commenting ; upon .the arithmetic examination, paper, set by Mr. Lee, concerning which there has lately been'some discussion, a correspondent says that the question relating to interest, on sums periodically deposited in a savings bank is not fair, "because only persons using the bank would be likely to. know that money deposited on.January 1' does not bear interest until. February 1, and so on for the rest. Thus the money put-in on December 1 would oarry no interest".

Telegraphic intimation has been received by Mr. C.'S. Nixon, 'Collector of-Cus-toms, to the effect that Captain Forsdick, of the Orari, will call on him at Wellington ' this morning, in respect to making an affidavit regarding the accident to tie Waimate in Auckland Harbour-in July, 1904. Captain Forsdick was in command of the Waimate on'the occasion referred to. His affidavit will be forwarded by the Collector of Customs to Auckland, and will bo put in as evidence at the magisterial inquiry into the stranding of the Kaipara.
In the various public examinations, held in November and December last Wanganui College sent up 43 candidates, and 31 passed. The passes in the matriculation examination were IS out of 30 candidates.
In connection with the proposed review of the cadets and boy scouts by FieldMarshal Lord Kitchener, there will be a muster of scouts. for practice parade at the city boundary, Miramar, at 2.30 p.m. to-day. .
A handsome gold, medal, weighing three ounces, has been presented to the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association by the Qneonsland Jubilee Exhibition .authorities, to commemorate. the fine' athletic performance given.by the Dominion's • representatives when, they won. the inter-State championship held during' the progress of the exhibition; in Brisbane last August. , The medal, which has been received by the secretary (Mr. W. The city corporation have decided to put a stop to: the practice of people walking.through the Kilbirnie tramway, tunnel, and at the Magistrate's _ Court yesterday, a charge against'an individual of" violating- the cifr by-laws in : this respect was mentioned. Mr. 0 Shea, city solicitor, who appeared on behalf of the council, said that the matter had been, settled out of Court to: the advantage of the corporation, defendant ■ agreeing to pay- the costs .of the prosecution.'
