GOLD RETURNS.

; (By TolcsraDli.—Special CorrcsDondcnl.) Auckland, February'l. The,returns-from, tho gold-mines in the Auckland district i'or 1901) must be regarded as satisfactory, having readied the substantial total of, Ji1,312,821 12s. 7d. Though this docs not constitute a record it is the fourth highest' readied during the past twenty-five years,'-and when making comparisons it must bo remembered that the three bigger yields which were established in l!)0ii, 31)07, and 1908 "were largely brought about by tho phenomenally rich patch of gold -lvliicli was worked in the Waiotahi mine during, those periods, and which has now como to an oiid. in 31)06, ■when tho' big Waiotahi patcli was first worked, tho output totalled '<£1,338,395, or £25,570 7s. Gd. in excess of last 'ycaiv In 1907, when the'Waiotahi run was worked for tlie full twelve months,"'the record total of. £1,421,216 15s. Id. was established, being <£108.392 Is. Gd. in' excess of the total for 1909. In 1908,' during which, year (lio rich run in question was worked out, the total registered was .£1,317,419 Bs. 10d., compared with '>vhich tho-3909 output represents a decrease of only .CISM lGs. 3d. This decrease is' accounted for in .the : reduced output from tile Waiotahi mine alone, viz., . ,£4550. 19s. 7(1. There are, however, .other decreases, and sinie 190S the' Now Zealand Crown Mines have been closed'down. The decreases thus represented are, however, counter-balanced to a very large extent by increases from other mines, notably the Waihi Grand Junction mine, which shows an increaso of ,£28,997 9s.' lid. on: its 1908 total, and the famous' Waihi mine, which, shows an - advance-of' <£22,128. These increases nro certainly encouraging, as showing the permanency of. the mining industry, and this applies particularly, in the case of the famous Waihi mine, tho returns from, which- have consistently advanced year by year. When the corrected returns from tho celebrated bullion producer are to hand:it will, lie found .that last' year's total will be little short of .£900,000. The quantity of. oro to be handled. this year will probably be greater than during 1909, i\"hich means that the mine may during 1910 .resell Hie "millionaire" mark. The total yield for the. .Auckland district for 100b is : made up las follows:— Ohinemuri, >£1,287,899 2s. 5d.; Thames, JE19,116 3s. 3d!; Coromaudel, .£5803 lfis. lid. ConipaTed with the'figures for 1908, these returns shojv, an' increase of ,£5289 ss. 4d. in the case'of 'Ohinemuri, an increaso of ,£Bi(i Is: Sd. for and- a decrease of ;£10,739 3s. 3d. in the returns from tlio Thames: . • ' ■ The' yearly returns from the Auckland district'for the past ten years are as follow 1609,'' ' £1,312,824 12s. 7d.j.* 1908, £1,317,419-Bs.' lOd:; 1907,- 'i 11,421,216 j 1900; £1,338,395;-1905, £1,030,382; 1904, £874,561; 1903; £959,G05; 1902/£803,094; 1901, £758,-; GOO;: 1900, -£035,033.y '■ ■ ' • : ~ The following arc the totals for.Ohineinuri for the same periodl9o9; £1,287,899 2<vsd.;--1908, £1,282,600; .1907; £1,241,331; 3900, £1,079,013;. 1905,. £931,021; 1504, £820,134; .1903, £869,739; 1902, £680,790; 1901,' £035,004; -19C0, £191,720.
