PETONE HIGH SCHOOL.
A BEQUEST FOE LASIX V; , The; Mayor, ■: of . Petone (Mr. . J. ■, W.. M'Ewan); and Messrs. E. W. Short and J. • Piper, -of the . Petone Borongh . Council, interviewed the "Minister: for Justice; (the Hon.' Dr. Findlay) .yesterday with reference to the acquisition of a portion of .the Courthouse Reserve in Buick Street, Petone, as an , additional: area to'the three sections proposed to be purchased for the purpose, of a high 'school site. 'Mr. M'Ewan explained that; the area ; proposed .to be,purchased was oyer a quarter, of an acre; and the High School Site Committee, ■ desiring to. enlarge... this, "wished, to acquire .-a' portion of the ' adjoining reserve, which, it was considered, was sufficiently large. to allow of the loss of : 'a portion without in any way rediic-. ing its value as a site for a courthouse. The Government,,contended Mr v M'Ewan, would not actually lose by the transfer, as the land was really wanted;for public educ/.tion. '
• Jj the course of his reply, the Minister observed that his: Department had 'as many calls upon its resources, as the'other Departments, and ho could riot afford to be generous, even to 'the Education Department. He had to husband his- resources very closely and carefully. Within the last five months he had had as many as eight or nine applications' for grants of portions of police or courthouse reserves for educational purposes. These reserves, it was true, were not immediately required for the purposes to which they had been originally dedicated,'but there would come a time when they would be. He . would ask the Under-Secretary to go'into the'matter and also would consult the Minister for Education (the. Hon. 6. l'owlds). '' I
