♦ r Thero passed away at 22: Nairn, Streets last evening, a": lady well ■ known: to alargß ' ; circle of friends in Wellington and tho. :.' West Coast of, the South Island—Mrs.: Catherine: Dwan; Mrs. Dwon, .who vraa, ' the relict of-the late Thomas.Dwan, .was ;born in Roscreea, Tipperary,: 1 Irelani. , She: was married ;in October, 1857, and", sailed'.' immediately thereafter forv^Ans-., traliri; landing in Molbourns '.mvMarottf. of the' following : year. She. followeed her. husband's fortunes; in- the. various. nun•irig rushes of those early; days, and sut»" ; fered' all the inconveniences and hardships of the- times..;.-.. All her children ' .were born in. tfents in mining camps, and ' many privations had.to. be faced. .At ono . period of her life sho had. to carry every drop of water. needed 'for ; .her; householda' distance of two miles." This was: at- < Inglewoodi Victoria, and her - neighbour, at that time was tho late Sir Jnlius VogoL -, - She left Australia about 1867 for- tho West Coast of the South Island, and' landed in Brighton, near Charleston. Th£ distance between ■ the tyro places had to be tramped .through bush, tracks, and o± tho .time Mrs.' Dwan had a-,.baby;;.in:-her arms. ' On reaching Charleston it was-dis-covered that sho .had worn'' the -shoes off' her feet Among the party, to arriv# . •from Melbourne ahtho same. time were a number, of other women, and the diggera,- . in'a body lined .up and cheered themj' ;• because they 'were'., tne 'first, women to arrive at tlio diggings. Mr. and Mrs. Dwan left the coast for Wellington:in 1878, and " resided here continuously up to .the;tiine ■- '■' of her death.. Sho was of a retiring disposition, . but extremely proud; of -lier • nationality. Amongst her own circle of friends'' she ' was'' greatly.' beloved, ■ and ' • the ' Roman Catholio ' Churchv loses anearnest worker and one of its oldest mem-.; bers ill this city. ' Mrs. :Dwan leaves two sons and six grandchildren to mourn her. loss. The. funeral tubes placo at 2JO p.m. to-morrow. . ■ * *. *; .
