COROMANDEL SPEOIiIENS.' ", • (By . Telegraph.—Press Association.) - Walhl, January 27. < • The development at No. 10 level of the ■ W,aihi mine has been marked :b'y the intersection of a freah ore body in the vicinity ,of. the Empire, lode. ' Tho importance of the new specimen ' lode in tho Old Hauraki mine, Coromandel, is. emphasised by the fact' that the rich chute will in all probability continue for hundreds of feet upwards; also, that a length of a little over four feet , yielded 4001b. of specimen stone. Old Coromandelites hero arc of opinion that the developments are the forerunner of what oc* ' curred in tho mine y6ars ago. ' • MINING NOTES. Old Hauraki.—Tho Coromandel corres-, pondent of the "New Zealand Herald" reports:—There is now no doubt but that " tho reef which has lately produced all the rich specimen stono is ontircly new. It ! is running in a aouth-westorn direction, and into, a portion of . tho mino where no previous work has been done. At my in- ' spectiou of the mino'to-day rich specimen - stono was showing in the rise. Work at • tho completion of tho conncction with the winzo is in progress, and tho difference in the cour3c of the two reefs is very digtiiict. The company's crushing , at tho battery is still proceeding. . . May Queen—Tho manager of the 1 .May, .Queen mine,' Thamos*'reporting'-for *tho 1

1 wcdU ended January,' 21, states that- the t slopes on tho footwall branch of, No. 4 i lode, above No. 6 level, are being carried 0 along, and the quartz, 'as usual, -showß . nice colours ;of pold. Ilie intermediate E drive on the hangingwall branch leader is being ahead, while the leading 1 stope is also beinp brought fonvard. In both tho drive and the stope tho quartz shows gold pretty freely, and at timea • yields, a little picked stone. This leader lias been picked up at No. 6 level, and has been driven on 10 feet. It looks well,' ,and shows some good dabs of gold.; The qnartz coming to hand from the footwall branch in the stopes poing eastward shows colours of gold at each breaking down. . Thames.—At the Thames mine, .driving is , proceeding on. tho Cambria reef, seawards, and 8-feet have been driven. . The reef maintains its size, 5 feot. and some of the • quartz carries nice mineral indications, but no'va-lues have been met with. . Golden- Pah.—ln . the Golden Pah mine, Goromandel, the winzo from the 80 feet level has:been sunk :5 feet, and colours of gold were ( seen in the hangingwall portion when breaking down : during the week. H'Donpld's leader in the same level is .being driven on. It. is A inches t0.6 inches in width, and is heavily mineralised, and is in a splendid channel of country. ' Pride •of Tokatea.—The Btopes on tho cross lode in' the - Pride of Tolsatea mine are being coiitinued with three men. . A quantity of quartz has been broken, but very little gold has been seen. At the low -level, in order ,to test- the footwall lode under -foot whilo the weather, is . dry,' the winzo iB being sunk with two shifts. Very nice quartz is showing, but so far not pay1. able; Iteliance.—At the Reliance mine, Thames, . work during the past week has been confined to driving on the reef east of the crosscut.. Fifteen feot - has been driven, . and tho reef is improving as the drivo advances, the quartz being .more solid/ and I carrying some nice minerals, with every. ' indication " for ' making gold. The • man- ■ • v agcr is in hopes of picking up somethingI good shortly, as some rich gola .was got iu • • the workings.^overhead,' aud east of the : present face. -j , -. t j 1 , Kur'anui.r-Fair progress has been made with tho main drivo in the Kuranui mine, / Thames. .The country carries small ribs of quartz,'and water is nov/ making at, tho face. Tne parallel stringer is. now running into the western'wail, 'and will bo, left for the present in order' to intersect .the main iodo as soon as possible. ■ The shaft.leader west, was broken down on \ Jriaay, and the ore. paddocked, it-being • highly mineralised. 'A small stringer has > been cut on.the footwall side,,and appears' to bo:a dropper from tho main reef, being • about.2 inches wide. .Work on the eastern ■. side of the main lovel has been stopped 1 for , the present, so as .to place . the. men 1 : on tho; western' side, where the indications ;.aro much more. favourable. > A rise has I . been put up ;7 feet in order to give 'a fair stope, -which-was to -have been commenced j towards the Manureka shaft-yesterday. -As 1 [- £ OOI i, aa theshaft is reached,, an i ' hand stope „can immediately bo brought • back to tho main* drivo, thus proving tho ground abovo . and'below ; the : main level.
