The question' of the matriculation standard was further considered by the University Senate to-day. Recommendations made by the Scholarship Committee were oonsidei-ed in committee,: and the. following.were adopted' by U votes to i, and ivill come into operation on, January 1, mi:— ■' :■ , ' "
■ That the compulsory, subjects of the entrance examination be as fol- - low English (two papers), including olementary. questions in political .'-geography. and .English \history ; (b) mathematics (two papers), including arithmetic, algebra, and the elements of geometry; .(c) Latin,: Greek, French or Gorman (one paper); (d) and (except in the case of-candidate who takes Latin or Greek) one of the following branches of science (one paper):—Elementary- mechanics, elementary. heat.', and light,- elementary electricity and magnetism,' elemen- : tary dentistry, elementary zoology,' elementary botany, : elementary ■ agri-, culture. . .
JEverycandidate' shall pass in five subjects, the remaining- subject, or subjects," to be selected ■. from . the subjects mentioned, in the ( existing' statute,' and not already taken by; the' candidate' No candidate shall offer himself, for examination in more'than six subjects. ' . '■ •
The Senate decided that-the statute relating to the B.A. degree be amended by adding a provision-, that no undergraduate shall be allowed to keep terms for that degTee. in. affiliated, oolleges, unless he has-passed is.. Latin at . matriculation standard!. .
It was resolved that the "question aa to mathematics being : compulsory:., for, the B.A. degree examinations be referred to the: Eecess ..Committee- appointed 10 consider the proposed alterations . in the B.A. lind B.Sc. courses.
Professor Bickerton, of Christchuroh, forwarded a considerable, amount-. of printed matter relative, to his theory ,of partial impact, .and-requested- the Senate to rive his work recognition in 6ome way; ? He pointed orit that he had voted' his life to tho 6tudy of this matter, and that, though his theory had at l first been .treated liphtly ; by scientific men, it was-fast receiving world-wide i-e----cognitioni Because he had refused to give up his belief:, in his hypothesis he had lost his position in Canterbury i College, ; and ■•: because' people had; chosen to regardihim.'as a'crani, many of;''his enterprises had since" failed, 1 and .he;had' lost some. ,£7OOO. He was 68 years of -age,' and; unless-, the; Senate.gave hihi isome recognition, -he. was. afraid that he would not livo to see' the result of his' life's' work. •
The Senate, without discussion, resolved to "receive" ■ the ■ letter, 'and thank Professor Bickerton for the printed matter forwarded.. •.' .
