WITH WHITE WINGS.

PORT NICHOLSON CLUB'S REGATTA. ■ "THE BEST FOE YEAES." ~ "The best that has been held for years"; was the general opinion of the annual regatta of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club which ~wa9 held. on. Saturday, and there is no doubt, after witnessing the enthusr issni which characterised Anniversary Day, that yachting is now on a . firmer footing than it has been for many years past. A fresh southerly blew all day and enabled the whole of the'yachts to carry full sail. The harbour presented a pretty sight before tho start of the first races in the morning. Something like 45 actual competing, boats ,hovered round the'starting . line, all carrying full: sail and, in addition to' these, a number of non-com-batanjs swelled the' total. considerablyProminent. amongst tlie racers was. the big; yacht Waitangi which had. stripped her cruising rig for a huge big racing main-sail. The-.sight of the eleven, entrants for - the General Handicap running before the 1 wind with .: all their kites, set, at the; beginning of. the -race, was one to gladden the . heart of the yachting enthusiast, and to appeal to even the. longihoreman. .This race was a capital one,' the old -. champion, Wajtangi, shoWing:".the way round the course and finishing first, nine minutes ahead of White Heather^which was only a minute and a half ahead of the Atalanta. The actual; winner, on time' allowance, was the ■ Nanoya,' which finished '24 .minutes behind.', the; Waitangi, but had a time allowance of 36 minutes. The Lizzie had the misfortune to carry away. her mast just, after rounding, the Kqrokoro buoy, and, the Taipare, which was close by, gave'-up her chance in the race and took the damaged : bdat in tow. It it just,a question whether or' not' the committee of/ the - club will order the race 'to be rosailed..

There.were.eight starters for the fourth['class','rice' wMcE"fell to the Nikau. This boat. had : a.handicap .of 30 :minutes, but she-:had ■ ho need.' of. it as she finished the. course in. ;the fastest time with .over .10; minutes , to . spare ;in actual. sailing time.;'; The,' third-class; race was won by the. MahaH- on time allowance, although the': Eawene put up the'; fastest ■ time for. the'.' course. The last! of the morning ovents' was the' race for the-16ft. class which attracted ■ twelve starters.' ■, The Nan -was first,,home, ,bnt Doreeri carried Qff- the:first;prize. Nan having to be con--tent - with'second place when time allowances w-ere 'totted up. During the' afternoon .the' second series of contests were decided. .

: Only'four boats came out for the secorid<lass "A" handicap, and one of these, White Heather,' : was thrown out of the race soon after rounding', the Korokoro buoy through her -main gaff,'snapping off alxiut.three feet from the mast. -The Atalanta finished first, Janot second, and Mahina third, '-Mahina winning on time allowance. -Tlie' White Heather completed the course under-her foresails and'jigger. Two slight miships occurred in "the sec-ond-class "B" . handicap, botii-. Taipare and Nancy. Stair carrying "away their bob-stays. - The -latter,- r however, repaired her damage and finished .'second to , Viking. ' _ >

Mahaki accounted for the third-class handicap, but there: appears to be some doubt; as. to -whether,,she can .hold'.first position under the', rjiles as she passed on I the, wrong .side' of Somes Island. This matter will probably be threshed out by the .committee, at a later date;. The second fourth-class even'fell' to the Tuna after a'close, finish-with Te Ehuna. ■ In the last of the 16-footer races there was a great-finish to-first' to cross the' line ..between Nan and: Eambler. •; When within- a few,.lengths, of the finishing post Bambler held a lead.' of fully a -length and a '.half, : -when, she collided with a launch, which. wis, making for the boat , harbour. . . The.littlo sailer hit the,launch I fair .amidships,-, but-the. only, damage sustained' was.;a broken' bowsprit. ' The collision; however, allowed Nan- to' cross' the line. 15 seconds . ahoad. of Eambler,' although' the latter, won comfortably on' time, allowance.' ..'Two launch races' were, decided ' during.' [the': 'day, . interesting' :'finislies resulting in both ra'ceß. .Veronica, carried;.off:the.morning race, and Cygnet -was'-victorious 'in tho; afternoon..; ' The. Jiandicap race for ccal 'hulks-boats was : hot Bailed, hone of the hulk keopera put; '■ ting in an'appearance. : '- , ■ ~f The.' ofilcials for.- .the s , day -. were:—Committee, Messrs.;. H. ; ' Chieholm, C.'. Headland,. W.; Highet, A. Holmes, G. Hoggard, and; T; Hamer; h'andicapper,"'Mr." : J. M*Lenn; starters, Judges,., and time; keepers, Messrs. J. Kelly, J. H. Barrett, S. Dodgson, and. A. Newbold. ; Mr.' T. -Pierard: carried out'.the-'duties of starter and. timekeeper. for. the launch races. -!,;
