BRITISH ELECTIONS.

UNIONISTS' PROSPECT. TO BE THE STRONGEST SINGLE PARTY IN THE HOUSE. LIBERALS HOPE FOR GOOD MARGIN. TclcßKipu—Press AESooiation-Copyricht. (Itcc. January 22, 1 a.m.) London, January 21. The "Chroniclo" (Liberal) comments: "Tho decisive issue will bo fought in tho counties the alternative is between ' a majority so attenuated as to make the future uncertain, and a' great majority adequate to support a strong Government in coming to grips with the Lords and in clearing the path of demomocratic progress." . "Tho Times" writes:'"lf the Unionists continuo to work as they have done hitherto, they have the prospect of being the strongest.single :party in tho new Parliament. In the event of there being a strong Unionist Opposition, Mr. Asquith's hands will bs strengthened on such vital questions us' national defence, also in the promotion of all legitimate legislation. But he will bo weak,, and most rightly so, for carrying out revolutionary attacks on the Constitution, on. tho integrity of the Empire, and on private property." AT PRESENT RATE UNIONISTS WILL BE SHORT OF MAJORITY. The state of parties, «o far as the elections have gone (including all the latest of this morning's results) is as follows , .— Lost. Gained. Retained. .Total. •Unionists „„ 9 " 67 84 151 'Liberals ~., 62 12 ,' 123 135 Labourites 12 4' 22 26 N Nationalists - - 47 47 Total Seats Returned 1. ...„ „ 359 Total Scats in Houso .._ _. !...„ 670 . There are' 670 seats altogether. Accordingly there aro 311 contests yet to be decided. If the' Nationalists keep tho strcncjth-83 ' seats-they had in tho last Parliament 'there will bo 275 seats for distribution amongst tho other three parties. Should tho results be proportionate to those already announced, theso 300 seats will be distributed as follow::—Unionists, 133; Liberals, 119; Labourites, 23. In that event the state of the parties will be: Unionists ,284 Liberals - 254 Labourites ._ _ - 49 Nationalists _ • 83 Total ..'. * ; CO Tho. Labour strength' in the last Parliament was about 50. It has already lost oight out of thirty-one of its scats (one-fourth of its holding), and it ,is therefore most probablo that its final strength will be three-fourths of what it was, i.e., 33, and not 49. In that, case thero will bo clovon Labour seats still to be lost, and, if tho present proportions hold, six of these should go Unionist and live Liberal. The state of parties would then be as follows:— Unionists _ 290 ' Liborals ....'. 259 Labourites '< .". - 38 Nationalists - ~ 83 Total ...'. ~ 670
