1. Ifilitary Science to be an'., optional subject for tho Arts course.
2..A;-Chair, of Military Science to -be established" at cacliofthefour, university colleges." The : Government to be •; approached'to provide a sum not exceeding, -i£3ooo per annum to cover salaries. - 3. In' 1907 the "War '-'Office .brought before' the colonial Premiers, then' in - England attending the' Imperial Conference, the question of : thd.advisability of colonial universities, affording facilities ' for- the study of Military Science;- A'large proportion' of candidates : offering:ifor com'lhissions in the regular Army: liavo forsome years been- drawn/from Home universities, anil tho ! supply from this -source' is increasing. : .' 4.' Chairs. of. Military" Science exist at Svdney-. . University and at M'Gill University. ! ' ' 5. - A Professor, of Military. History. has lately been appointed at Oxford, and a third of tho subjects : taken for . the B. A. degree may ..be military subjects. ; G. A suggestion'was made to' the' New Zealand University . Senato' -in; 1908 that military ;drill , and . efficiency with the rifle be allowed to cotmt as an optional subject.for the Arts course. This seems due' to a misconception, and is undesirablo from- an academic and educational point- of viow. What is : required ■is facility for . obtaining tuition in' ; • the ■higher branches of Military - Science, not in drill and other ' merely elementary branches. . The syllabus Mould include:—Military history,' strategy, tactics,, ' military geography, .miHtaiy engineering,' administration, organisation, and military law.
