AN ADMIRABLE DISPLAY. , • The- Flower" Show, held hi,tho Drill She_d at Petone-.on. Saturday, .was almost entirely devoted.to: sweet peas, of which there was a .splendid display, and,? of those, Mr. Trevethick showed by-far!the greatest number.. The, various exhibits' comprised over 2090 spikes of bloom, ami represented probably . one of the finest ever, shown in . the district. He was awarded the medal of the National Sweet Pea Society for his 24,vasos of sweet peas,' distinct varieties, a beautiful display, the finest of all being a'large palo pink. pea,, almost shell-coloured, with long : stem and flowers sot, well apart/ This is one of Mr. Trevothick's own' seedlings, and at. present has no name, being merely marked "seedling,oho." Another of his seedlings, a bright _ mauve, "seedling 3," is considered: by-judges to bo even finer-than'the one. "Maori.'Belle," very "much like it, which Mr. Trevethick" sent Home for' classification by tho National Sweet Pea! Society,-'some time ago; and which wa's accorded' a prize as the besti lavender pea so' far produced..'.The main atrr'action of the'show .was tho'long table: con-, taining ,U5 distinct varieties of peas, only 24 of which had ever been shown.before., Mr. . Trevethick' is to. be .congratulated upon this/exhibit-, more.especially! since the galo of. Christmas' week wrought great havoc'in "his'garden. All the. peas in the.show were arranged in clear glass or white ftises, jvith. feathery grass, which had a: charming effect when they were viewed',as, n /whole; ..',
Mr. Hughe's secured a .certificate• of merit for his excellent'/; exhibit, and, among his-.blooms, wore ''some, very fine .purples, -including ' -.the-.,- now.- "Othello :Speucer"—dark as : a' Moor, and he also showed,a beautiful bluo"Lord, Nelson"— one of ".the"-'finest deep, blues produced.. Somo splendid .blooms were . shown in tho amateur; section, which 'was a. large one, and exceptionally good. . '." ' , Only a_ very, few sand small ..carnations Were shown—their day is nearly done. Mr. F...Cooper 'had .'an exhibit, mainly, of most gorgeous". gladioli blooms, with a/variety of other flowers.-' Mi. Pointon -had an exhibit of rose's, with a fino yel--low calla, .and-sorao .deep .red Coral 'flower,., a :brilliant flowering I 'shrub, v. - . Mr.. Jackson, of ..Togeltown, sont.anex.nibit of gladioli, which, though good, did •dot come,up to,the,level of.sOine of liis previous .exhibits.., This, was, probably becauso_.it is -between seasons. . One very beautiful. bloomj ..named'■' "Dawn,":■ was. truly in sunrise colours, palo pink, shad-'. ing,-in. tho' centre to. deeper rose. ...This • had very wido side' petals''like' winged clouds.' Another, with th'o v pretty name Delight" was' a dead white, with purple centre,., edged -, with -pale 'yellow, the colours harshly! distinct.'.
