HIS TRIUMPHAL JOURNEY SOUTH. ARRIVAL IN SYDNEY. By Telegranh-Press AfisociaMon-Oopyriehfc (Rcc. January 5, llJD'p.m.) Sydney, '.January h. Stations along Lord Kitchener's route • from Queensland wero ciowded with people, who watched his train pass. ''. At Newcastle the Mayor welcomed Lord' Kitchener, who inspected th», defences. A big gathering, including Vice-Admiral Sir ,Richard Poorc, tho .mililary heads,, ' tho Minister for Defence (Mr. Joseph' >, Cook), aiid members of the Federal and the State Parliaments, welcomed "the 1 Field-Marshal on his arrival at Sydney. Bα quietly acknowledged tho ostentatious'' treetings of the public. Lord Kitchener Was "entertained at a l> civic banquet in the Town Hall to-night. ' Over seven thousand ' troops ' will participate in the camp at Liverpool -and'•> " in the field operations to bo carried oui " in tho presence of Field-Marshal Lord Kitohener.
THE VALUE OF THE VISIT HERE. AUCKLAND OFFICER'S OPINION. (By Telegraph -Special J Correspondent) ' m , , Auckland, January 5. J. no decision of LoTd Kitchener to dispense with ceremonial parades of welcome, and to inspect district troops during field manoeuvres (stated a prominent volunteer officer to an Auckland interviewer) is certainly something now, and yet quito in keeping with tho characiei of the man who, on his appointment ~ as Chief of the Staff in South Africa during the late -nar, cleared tho hotels and clubs of Capo Town of indolent officers, and drove them to tho ifront. < His idea of field inspection is eminently practical, and will give him a surer in- i clication of tho \alue of colonial arms. ' i Local officers havo discussed the matter freely, and there Beems to be a certain ' amount of elation at the proposal toidr6p ' show for something oi a more practical nature. The plan to be followed locally ' will, of course, be m generpl ' ordor3, but it is generally understood if that the New Zealand military authorities are already in communication with Lord Kitchener, and that his approval of, or ' cuticisra and suggested amendment to, 1 the scheme wi'l be cabled across. _The " ■ advice of Lord Kitchener, after he has 1 Viewed our corps at field work, Bhould ijje of the greatest value.
