THIRD WOOL SALES.
- HELD YESTERDAY. : COARSE WOOLS ADVANCE. ; '■'■ BRADFORD BUYS. FREELY. , - ' .The third of the series of Wellington wool, sales held in the Concert- Chamber [of the Town Hall.yesterday was a gratifying success. I The catalogues of the Various.' brokers;.aggregated about 19,630 bales, and selling under the hammer was remarkably: good, showing that the valuations placed oil; tho wool by the owners ;ivere reasonable...The attendance of buyers beat all previous , records. Representatives or French houses were to the fore, while America, Germany, and Yorkshirewere well represented. : Bradford -was obviously wanting wool,'for many of the buyers, had large orders and operated freely. The-bidding at times was extremely animated, the keenness-of those operating affording some amusement to the large audience in the gallery. The prices., realised were in . advance of the December quotations, especially.for coarse wools,.and, as far as can.be ascertained, .there is complete satisfaction - with the .results..'J'pr the first-time many of tho: larger merino men of Marlboreugh—those .with clips ranging from 200 to 400' bales —had some of their, wool in the market yesterday, and there, were, buyers, for. it ■\ The only unsatisfactory'feature,-and. one that should receive prompt ' attention, is the'inadequacy of the.storage accommodation.-. The .'wool:, was. stored in quite a number of: different places, and buyers were put to a great deal-of trouble in inspecting and valuing' the parcels. The local 6ales are; steadily gaining" in favour, and- this';question.of , storage is one that will; reciir unless steps- are taken to : .makeVgood the deficiency. >'',• There are still complaints as to -carelessness (and worse) in the. packing of the wool,' and,. .if growers only knew how -\ the bales are ripped up and l the wool closely examined, they .would take less trouble to fill 'the centres of the-bales wjth cotted and bush-stained.".wools.- The' 7 brokers' ■ reports hereunder give a very full and com..prehensive review of the. market results.
'.;."'.-■.■■.■.;, ' . Daigety and. Co, > : : Messrs. Dalgety and Company, Ijimited report as follows:—We held our third/sale .of the season on-Monday, January ,3, when we offered, a catalogue pf 6464 bales out of ■a total of 19,637 bales, and sold 5731 bales at auction. 'The quality of the wool ■ offered was,'.-in. most cases; not quite as good: as that offered at the December sale, 'and, as is usual at this:time of the year, most of.; the, dips were much heavier in ■grease, although some fit for the American market came forward in very bright mnd light., condition; Competition was ;keon throughout-'the .sale,''and: there' was allarger- attendance of buyers -than,''previously, several ; new.' Continental/houses' ■being in' the field, while the local buyers ;as: usual operated freely.: One of the features, of our "sale was the quantity of. -merino offered,, several'..leading. Some ..very fine lines of'lambs'-wool'were offered, which opened'out well,.and met with'very gt'Od demand. Prices, ruling after allow;ing. .for the extra amount of gre'aEe in the wool, were practically, on a par with ■last sale for .medium and: fine wools. ■ Levin and Co. , ■•':■' Messrs. Levin and Co., Ltd., report:—At the .third sale, of the season, held yesterday, we offered 4300 bales of wool out of a total combined offering of 19,500 bales. There: was a large-attendance of buyers, the.benches being full,-and the New Year ■opened with, a sale which was as brisk ly, though, of coarse auality, was good held, this season. It.is usual, after the. two early sales have practically.-cleared the market of the liEht-conditioned wools, to find..the catalogues filled largely with the coarser and heavier type, and yesterday, was no exception. The wool generalally, though of coarse quality, wag good ■of its own particular-kind, and our catalogue was thoroughly representative of the best wool of tho district.. It was a day for. Bradford ■ wools, and there were ap-' parently strong orders in.the market from that quarter. America was. represented and took what lines were euitah;B at fully equal to. receijt rates. Coarse medium and inferior wools showed an advance o£ a' halfpenny (and as much as one penny in 'some,-.instances) on, last; sale prices. For lambs', wool thero was excellent demand , and; our best-lines sold at up to eleven pence. .There were several, new- buyers after locks and pieces and scouring iote and these were cleared at' high figures. We'sold'nearly, every lot in the catalogue the bqi'at,prices which'cannot bo.considered p'therwiso; than vory ' satisfactory. Murray, Hoborts, and Oo.ireport: —Wo catalogued 3100 bales for yesterday's sale. Taken on the whole, the average of the wool was in lighter condition than is usμal at this time of the year, the wool being mostly soundly grown. There. was not such a heavy proportion of bushBtained and seedy parcels in this cataloKue as is usual. There was a very'large attendance of buyers, whoso anxiety to buy was apparent at the outset, and there was a keenness, and'crispness about the bidding which augured a good clearance.' Prices' on the whole for medium conditioned woo!* must be quoted about !d.\'per lb. higher than at. last sale, especially when the condition of v the wool (being' heavier in the grease) ie : .taken'int6 account. There was not, however," the same keen demand from the American, section for the lighter conditioned'crossbreds as was apparent about a month, ago, probably owing to .the fact. •iat the wool:is heavier in the grease. Prices for these sorts were ' hardly on a par with last sale. We cleared. the bulk of onr catalogue (about 90 per. cent.) at auction,-.the lots; passed in being those where the growers insisted upon Keeping high reserves on; their clips; a. proportion of these will probably, bo sold later.
