NOTES ON THE RACING. Fifi. was tbe only withdrawal from the Juvenilo Handicap, for which „ Killaloo was favourite, but Sir Solo and Longstep had plenty of supporters. Sir Solo showed a decided, aversion to , the barrier, and though he eventually pot away well,.ho ran badly and finished out oi a place. Killnloo had a very easy victory at the finish. Oliver kept him behind the leader till the home bend, but as soon as he got his head the Kilchcrnn colt made the opposition look very weak. Subdue led in the early stages, bat tiled m the last

furlong British Maid put in a good im at tho finish, but coula make no impression on tho winner, who appears to Dβ 8 \ory useful colt , Hilanan was withdrawn from the TaI waha Hack Handicap, and this left afield of so\en to go to the post. Pukewai was installed a firm favourite atthe opening of the betting, and he retained, this position till the close His trainer was \erj confident of his ability to win, and tho horao. justified this opinion by leading throughout Half way up the straight Eeid appeared to be doing his 1 best on the son of Waiuku, but, at the winning post, he had them all well beaten Chauvebn looked to be going well as thej came to the home turn, but he was stopping again at tho finish. Fust Consul ran a good race, but ho is evidently not quite himself, and would probably be benefited by a spell The placed horse 9 were twenty lengths ahead of the rest of the field. Chauvehn was the only defection from the big race, for which Meme Zealand was made a firm favourite, with Tumut and Riston next in demand The favoarlte was unable to gain a place. He got away well, but, after two furlongs,' dropped back to last, and occupied a rear position till T\cll into the straight, when he ran up behind the placed horses. No Trumps was taken to the (front at the banner rise, and, setting a solid pace throughout, maintained the lead, and won comfortably by a couple of lengths. She pulled up well, and is undoubtedly ver* fit at the present time. Riston showed pace in the early stages, but faded right out of the hunt when half the distance had been covered Tumut was in a handy position throughout, and had a good run left when the straight ' was reached, but ho was not equal to conceding the winner 251b. Trugonini, with her usual luck, ran into third place. \ Pukewai, who won the Tawaha Hack Eace, was withdrawn from the Wharepapa Welter, and, for the fourth saooes. sive race, the field consisted of seven runners Hilanan earned most money, and, ridden a nice race by Reid, he won comfortably Waxy appeared to be going well at the straight entrance, but he stopped-quickly, and finished out of a place Eangikapua, who moved eore ia his ptelimuu&ry, was in a rear posibon for , the first half of the journey, but he finished gamely, and beat all but tie winner. Manonus, a neat-looking eon of Crackshot, showed a lot of pace in the , first part of the race, and should Dβ' worth noting for Mure events. First Battery was the public seleetjca in the Ruamahunga Hack Handicap, and Mania was the best backed of the remainder. The favourite did not begin very smartly, and, before a furlong had. , been covered, ho was conceding .quite half a dozen lengths to Palestine, who was on the move when the barrier w released The test of making up thii lost ground proved too much for tne kttle chestnut, who, however, ran a creditable race, and finished second. Notwithstanding the fact that he had I to carrj the welter weight of 9st 111b* Full Rate was generally considered certain to win the Eussell Handicap, and Sunbonnet and Warlock were the only horses tnat opposed him. The finish was tne best of the day, heads only, separating the three candidates at the finish. Full Kate went to the front shortly after the start, and appeared to luive everything in his favour, ' but, whea Lkfed by Warlock and Sunbonnet, h« did not put up much of a fight, «&**» beaten by bot£ of them. Oliver on Bug bonne! was first away, but he nursed his mount until well in the etrawht, and timed the final run to jost bring her to the front a. few yards off, the post, i > '' Magneto, who went lame in her raw on' Saturday, was withdrawn, from the Pinnoa Hack Handicap, and eo w < Foreshot. This left a field of four, First Bittery making Ms second appearance during the afternoon. He was again fastened on as favounte, but he again met 'with dofeat, and could only finish a poor second to Succession. The latter is a half-sister to the Great Northern Derby winner, Kilwinning. but she is much bigger. She won auite «*aly J o : day, and may be expected to shape weD when placed in better company. In the concluding event, Waiata, Splash, and Thera were heavUv backed, aid fair support was also accorded lx>ngner and Purakan Waiata was always tho actual favourite, and he had a comfortable victory. ' The start was delayed some minutes on account of Thera refusing .to approach the 'tapes, but eventually a fair dispatch , was effected: Purakau was in front for over half the distance, but Waiata had his measure throughout, and left him standing: when , tho straight was reiched JWngner was the best of /the horses that finished behind the winner, and he appeared very unlucky not to beat both Purakau ari Splash. v. Eauitas, it appears, was cast in her box the 'night Tefore the Waimapa races, and .she was sent home without being started on either day. Swallow (Conqueror-Waiwhora) was submitted to auction at Christchurch vesterday, but was passed in, as a satisfactory bid was not eUoitea. RangikaDua was very sore after racing at Tauhennikau yesterday, and is now to be treated to a spell. Advantage struck herself in a race on Saturday, and another of Lowes candidates, in Magneto, also went wrong, so that neither was able to start yesterday. The trouble is not serious in either case, and both should be ready to race 1 at Trentham this month. l Mr J. H. Tilson, the Wairarapa Rao--1 me Club's starter, did not control the I baraer in the Wharepapa Welter yesI terdav as a relative had a .horse engaged Mr J. S. Cundy took his place, and dispatched the field on even terms.
