The. track was. in splendid... order, and •with big fields, the racing was,of ,an exciting character.. The attendance was'not so.- largo 'as last • year, a possible reason for this being. rival. attractions' in . Weir, lingt'on; and the fact-that the train arrangements precluded, anyone presiding north of Masterton attending the whole day's meeting and returning the same day. The sum of .£B3ll was put through 'the totalisator,-which is l£B79'less than the corresponding day last year. Bookmakers' fees, (seven inside ana six outside) amounted to .£2lB 10s. •' . NOTES ON THE EACING. . The first race, .ithe Maiden! Hack. Handi-s cap, was contested by" sixteen . starters^' the .biggest field of the day. The defections.- were .Soprano,-' -Succession, Kalypso, Emblem, Field BelC- and Fore-', shot. Amongst'.,. more' 'fashionablybred, ones,- the. niost noticeable were: Lares, a half-brother to Penates; Whimbrel, the. big ..Birkenhead—Merganser colt; Pukewai, and; Gold Top. Although there was a large, field, there was proportionately little- speculation. Pukewai was a; pronounced favourite, and, leading from tne. start,' won - easily. It, was' thought at one. time that Manaia would extend Mr; . Cress's colt,'but. the. reverse was the case. Palestine'showed improved form. Lares, who had been doing - some, good work at Tfentham, showed ,an ill-, tempered disposition at' Tauherinikau, aud not much • was expected from h'iin. Whimbrel found the distance too' short for him: Fifi, a Clovelly filly, rather, smart to look at, was beaten by a.head, for third. place. ': Muertalm'a, who was not supported by the public, ran -a very good race. 'v!"'. : i Lord Soult and Magneto, who was re- ) served for the Pukio -Handicap, were the' only withdrawals from the Tuhitarata; Handicap,-.leaving a field of 'seven, : \in which Boanerges; started 'the biggest ; favourite. of the day. / The 'Pilgrim's ■ ' Progress colt, fully'justified the confidence placed in him; by the.public. Oliver kept him in a good position throughout the .race, and at'the business end lie chopped down Splash, and Waiata.. The time show's Boanerges to, be' very .fit.'.' Splash' finished.well, while Advantage was fourth on sufferance. Purakau lost some lengths at the post. '; r - ' Hilarian, who was kept back for the Mokai Welter, and: Pukewai and .Himitangi i wSre' scratched' for tho ( Kimutaka Hack . Handicap', , reducing . the'" field' .to six horses. First' Consul; .who , was. a slightly better, favourite than Chauvelin, was being, ridden hardr at six furlong's} and then finished last.
