_J ♦ THE LOCAL CHRISTMAS TIGERES. The period fiom December 17 to 21 (inclusive) was a particularly hve<y one in the General Post Office. Theio was a substantial increase 111 the mails handled lteio during that period, as compared with tho corresponding, period for last year, and though tho number of telegrams received and dispatched aro not appreciably laige this year, tliero is a big increase 111 tho use of telephone bureaux throughout tho Dominion for purposis ordinarily coming within tho tunetion of tho telegraph service. Tho following are the postal figures (for Wellington only j — Number bags dispatched 14,628 NUmbci hampers dispatched ■ ■ 1,090 Isrfinbcr bags received 5,401 Number hampers received ... 1,527 Total _ .. 12,649 , Dnnng tho corresponding r en od of last year, .%il bags and hampers wero dispatched, and CC27 bags and hampers wero received.
