A few nights ago a resident living in one of tho streets adjacent to the Square, heard a noise as of a window being raised, and on investigating tho cause, found a man attempting to make an entrance. Seizing a pokor he struck tho fellow a blow on the head, which had the eHoct of making him beat a hasty retreat. On looking around $ho hooiso morning, blood was fonnd on the gronnd, so that tho would-be burglar must havo received a blow that ho will not forget for a few days. • At the ordinary meeting of the Borough Council last night, the engineer was instructed to frame an estimate for. sinking arlesiaii uells for thti purpose of street-watering and supplying tho lakelets in the Square,' theso wells to be supplementary to the present supply. . A large deputation of residents from Hokowhitu waited on the council regarding tho matter of river protection. The Mayor pointed out that a Government engineer had inspected tho river bankb and they were daily expecting a report from tho Department, but until that was to hand, nothing could be donei in tho matter. It was decided to support tho action of tho Chamber of Commerce in requesting the Minister for Lands to have the Nativo lands in the borough cut up and made available for business and residential i purposes. Complaints aro boiny mado by businees men and others as lo tho late arrival of tho first tiain from Wellington, and hopes are expressed that tho Minister for will seo his way to give Palmerston a tram that mil arrive between 11 and 12 o'clock. . At tho Police Court to-day a young man named IVilliam Bersica was fined 20s. andedste on a charge of stealing clothing and books from shops near the railway station. The evidence of Detcchve Ouiike, who arrested accused, was to the effect that lio was muddled with drink; and evidently did not know what he was do ing. The man had previously borno a good charactoi, and the bench consequently took a lenient view of the offence.
