Brown, a young married man, passed away. Deceased was well-known-in Pahiatua, and his mother, is a resident ■of Hutt. ,A' • . Sir. E. Sullivan has presented an Irish national flag to the Mangatainoka -Athletic. Society. ■-. .-■ .■.-',- - In' connection with the Mangatainoka sports on Monday jiext, it is understood that a special train will run from Woodville, connecting with tho Palmerston and Dannevirke trains, and returning in the evening to-connect with the same trains. The Sports Committee have been Very busy of late, and, given a fine day ou Monday, a large gathering, is : anticipated. ' A very pleasant function took placo in the Olympic Theatre on Monday evening, when members of the Pahiatua Mro Brigade tendered a farewell smoke concert to Captain M'Alisteiy who has had charge of the brigade for tho past two and a half years. Tho Mayor (Mr. D. Crewo) presided, and a lengthy toast list was honoured, and vocal items and recitations rendered by: Lieutenant Wallis, Messrs. C. Clifton, H. A. Thomson, Geo. Oxley, J.I Mills,.- son., C. Mills, A. v C'oxford, and D. Wilton. Mr. J. Mills, sen.i gave an Irish jig. /Messrs!-'I I ."Stewart; :Kichardson,' Clifton,. J. Mills, sen.,' and H." Pea'rcey spoke'on brigade' niatters,_ and the latter, who in the early days of Pahiatua was captain of the brigade, humorously detailed some of the inconveniences which that body, then; were subjected to. Mr. D. Crewe, in presenting Mr. M'Alister with a handsome silver tea-service, made... eulogistic reforence to; the splendid manner in which members of the brigade had worked under the recipient, and'also referred, to : his 'many good qualities as a; citizen. M^r. : M'Alister .suitably replied, mentioning' that he would very much' liko to see ■ the' Borough Council make'better accommodation- at. the brigade shed for the firemen to spend their evenings. ■■ ; The fourth annual meeting of tho Pahiatua Starr-Bowkett: Building ' Society was held in St. Peter's- Schoolroom'on,.-. Monday evening last, and the'report Varid' balance-sheet 'showed the society:to be in a sound financial position. Directors fpr, the ensuing - term, were elected ..as follow..—Messrs. -.. D. Crawe' (chairman), '.T. Stewart, J. Hughes, T. Manifold, G. H., Smith, and Father M'Kenny. Mr. W.-J. Husband'w'ns re-elected, secretary, and Messrs. '6.j.C-Miller-and J. G. Swainsou auditors;- •'. : .•" ' Splendid summer weather still \provails in this district, and in somo instances one.-hears the proverbial growler, stating that the country is beginning to "get too dry,"-but such is not the case.
