SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.

AENST ACCEPTS. (By Telegraph.—Preu Association —Copyright 1 (Ecc. December 21, 855 p.m.) London, December 21. Much eatjsfaction is expressed m rowing oirolcs at B. Arust's acceptance of the offer made by South African sportsmen of a prize of £1000 for a mai/ch between Arnst and Barry, the English champion, to bo rowed on tho Zambesi Eiver, at Victoria Palls, in August] the winner to take £750, Arnst to be allowed .£3OO for expenses. The tiromotsrs suggnst that the race should take plac.il between August 18 and August 25,

WHERE ARNST STANDS. , Arnst has evidently considered tho offer mado him by cable last prize U750 for the winner and £250 for tho loser) and .£3OO to cover .oxpenses—and has, alter consulting his 'backers (Messrs. Parker, Buchanan and Dr. Thacker, of Canterbury), accepted. He originally stipulated for a side wager of £500 and £250 expenses, but this ivas considered unreasonable bj sculling authorities in London, thefugh it donbtleis had tho 'effect of increasing the expenses by £50. As the matter now staiidb, Arnet as the winner will receive £1050, and as the loser, £550. It has been given out that Arnst is in training in Nolson at present for a race with Whelch (the New Zealand chumpion), but as the information as to this raco has beon of the vaguest descrip'fcion, it is assumed that if it comes off at all it will not he for tho championship of the world, as that would have to be disposed of before arrangements for another match could be made, is most probably getting into condition for tho handicap to be rowed at Wanganui on January 6.
