THE DUCO.

THE WRECKAGE REPORT FROM THE CHATHAMS. Jho Secretary of the Marino Department (Mr. (1, Allport) has received the follbwinn roport on tho finding of wreckage from tho missing Wellington trawler Daco from the postmaster of tho Chajiam Islands — i '7 n t™i loss of tho B,s, Duco ln September last. I have to report that six or seven weeks after that tcwel left Wellington (September 7) large quantities of timber such as is used in making up fieh boxes commenced coming ashore, some done up in bundles and tied with wire, some nailed with pieces across tho ends, many others wcro etrown along tho beaches, having brokon loose. Tho timber was nearly all white pine, but some of tho end Pieces wcro of kauri. Somo barnacles had just started to grown on tho ends of tho timber, but it all looked fresh. "A nearly new 13ft, oar also came ashore, branded in blue on blade P.(E?) W: M. Co 'Wellinßton, in diamond, land letters like P.A.R.D. across near tho end of the blado On Mnunganui beach a boat hook, galvanised J ™ an orc ßon'pine shaft, came ashore, with Duco stamped in tho iron. This I am sending by the cantain of the Ripple to you. Soveral life-belts and parts of life-bolts also camo ashore, and one tin of carbide such as is used for night flashing when the water is allowed to como in contact with tho contents. All those things, I think, would belong to the musing tug Duco, and judging by tie time they took to reach hero it would appear that the WTeck must havo occurred near Wellington, aa I am informed that from six to seven weeks is the usual tamo for anything to drift that distance to theso islaids. "I may also mention that a number of kahiKatea log 3 aro coming ashore; as many as five came in at Maunganui in ono place. "I will report again if any further come asnoro. >
