The First Lord of tho Admiralty, Mr. M'Kcnna, addressing a mooting of three thousand at Southend, said,that tho year 1909 was memorable owing to the fact- of the' oversea dominions joining the Motherland in tho naval defence of tho Empire, contributing, proportionately to their growth, to tho strength of the whole. (Cheers.) Ho would shortly bo ordering two great ships of the Dreadnoughtcruiser class, which Australia and New Zealand "were providing and paying for. (Cheers.) Mr. M'Kcnna added:. ■■ , ■ '. "Well might we feel that the bonds of Empire aro closely linked, and -that bur'strength is great when we see the daughter' countries joining up 'and'helping to bear the burden of and Empire that encircles the globe." He mentioned that as only one of the great efforts towards ■ Empire consolidation undertaken by the present Ministry, which would be a lasting tnemorialto the fame of the Liberal Government. ....
