Tho conference will opon on January 4, and nr-' rangemeuts are now almost .complete. The order paper is a very lengthy one, and a number of the discussions should prove of general interest. '. '. •".-':■ A striking commentary upon the attitude of the commercial '.community'' towards book debts as. assets was forthcoming on Tuesday (writes, our Auckland' correspondent). 'A local firm of auctioneers, acting under instructions of the Official Assignee, offered the book debts of a number of firms for sale. The total involved ran into JC5578, that being the amount presumably owing to the particular businesses by customers and clients. Under the .hammer, however, the whole of the debts only realised about .£SO. The largest offer accepted for any single set of debts was £5 14s. , The past week's work at Lyall Bay "has not only 6een, the completion 1 of the, new .tramline, but the waiting-shed, ladies' -bathinghouse, '• and the band rotunda are now habit;' able. A start has.been made with tho men's dressing-shed, the whole of the framework of this building now being completed. ■':•,.. The annual meeting of the Wellington Helping Hand Mission, an; urisectarian body which carries on a good work with headquarters in Taranaki Street, was held last evening.' Major C. D. M'lntosh, who was in the chair, remarked on the progress inade during the year, and expressed the hope that, in the coming twelve months,. the mission would be enabled to extend its sphere of usefulness. Mr: L. 0. Stanton (missioner)' also addressed tho gathering, and Mr. M. Leaman (hon. secretary) read.tho annual report and balance-sheet, a summary, of which has already appeared in these columns. The College Rifles paraded at the Garrison Hall on Tuesday evening, there:being, an attendance of 45, under Captain Turner'"and Lieut. Hutchen.
