orally is -.hardly -up to thp normal, although tradesmen in some departments are.fully em--ployed. The building of .small cottages con-tinues-apace,,and has absorbed,a,large number of tradesmen. Freezing, works are just commencing operations,'and it is anticipated.that a fair number .of lambs will bo .coming to hand- almost at once. .: The- allied trades,: such as. ; felimongering, tanning,; and freezing, will all- benefit-by -the early start, v ■ '.';- :: -;C' : -[- : - -; : DUNEDIN. ;; ; - ; rV': :. The healthy state of trade; and business reported last ': month has been well maintained; in fact, in many instances there has, been improvement. ; Tho strong' demand-for country workers, particularly for -shearers'and general: farm'hands, has reduced the: number ot-un-employed in ' the city far bolow the average. With the exception of- the engineering and iron-working trades; which have agwn slackened, there has- been considerable activity mall manufacturing : industries, and- also, in , tho building trades. ■ This satisfactory state , has had a good effect on retail trades, and generally a*-good ro'porf has been received from.shopkeepers;: In-tho drapery branch several firms have been holding sales, and excellent business is reported; whilst others who have not -had sales - state ■'• that although trade; was j quiet at tho beginning of the month, it picked-up wellat the close. Boot shops report good averagO" business. In the grocery.and provision trades there has been a distinct: advance—due, 110 doubt, to the near approach of the Holiday soason.' After tho sharp- depression a, few months-back it is pleasing to note the splendid conditions now existing, which, it is an-ticipated,-will obtain till tho end of tho current year. -..'.
