Selling ice-creams in a shop in Rintoul Street dn Sunday, Deconler 6, was the nature of the charge against Jmios Perry Rico On behalf of defendant, Ml. lfitzgibbon stated that defendant was under tho impression that ho was allowed to sell ice-cream without being guilty of Sunday trading, 'even though the ice-cream were taken away from the shop. His Worship imposed a line of 20s, and 7s. costs. IN SORE TROUBLE. William Taylor was charged with being drunk-and using obscene language on a tramcar in Constable Street on November 26. To those charges ho pleaded not guilty, and was dofonded by Mi. P. W. Jackson. The inforrnation alleging insobriety was dismissed, hai on tho other chaige defendant was convicted and fined ,£5 and costs 11s., in default 21 days. ' l\>nr other charges were admitted. They were '1) driving furiously in Constablo Street on December i), (2) allowing two horses to wander on Docomber 9, (3) cruelly ill-treating a horse on tho same day, and (4) being drunk whilst in charge of a horso and vehicle, Defendant's counsed urged several excuses for the offences Tho hoise, ho said, was one oh "those, hard-monfchod terrible brutes", that could not be driven any way but furiously, and defendant had had a great deal of trouble that had dnvon him to insobriety. ' On the first was lined 205., and 11s. costs, on tho second 15s. costs, on the third 20\, and Is. costs, in default seven days, and on the fo-aith 405., and costs 295. Gd., in dofault fourteen days. CRUELTY TO HORSES. Several persons were convicted of cruelty ill-treating horses, or being pnvy to Guch illtreatment. Frederick Warr, for ill-treating a horso, was fined 20a., and lls. costs, in default I seven, days, and James Colwell, f6r permitting him to commit tho oftence, was, fined 405., and costs 21s. Cd, with a similar default. Thomas Cramp was fined 405., and 7s. costs, in default beven days for ill-treating a horse. INSOBRIETY, ETC. ' Eight men who had taken their first step on the road of insobriety, leading eventually to the Pakatoa Home, Here dealt with, four ot them bamg Sued ss, in default 24 hours, three convicted and discharged, and one remanded to December 20 for , medical treatment. To a charge of entering licensed premises dm ing tho currency of a prohibition orderi Jeremiah M'Mahon pleaded guilty, and was imed £2, and costs 75., in default savon. days' imprisonment. A prohibition order, to have currency foi qno year, was issued against Allan Steel Ramsay. MAINTENANCE. Henry Davy, represented by Mr. Luckio, was charged with, failing to comply with tho terms of an order for tho mamtenanco of his wif6. His Worship dismissed tho information, and levorsed tho previous decision making the lordci. K/ On two charges of failing to comply with the terms of orders for the maintenance of his wife and child, James Horon was conviuted and sontoncod to seven days' imprisonment. William Gttrthgate Wluto was ordered to pay 10s. per weok towards the maintenance of his wife, also costs 21s. Athol I'airs vas orderod to contribute 10s. and ss. per week towards the support of his wife and child respectively. He was also ordeiod to pay costs, £i Is. OTHER CASES. Having disregarded polico warnings, an eldeily woman named Annie Cain, alias Davis, was bronghl before tho Court on a ohargo of being a roguo and vagabond, in that 6ae had msulhcient lawful means ot support, nnd had beea previoubly convicted on a charge of being an ldlo and disorderly person. She pleaded guilty, and as sho had 31 trevious convictions u&ainst her name, bho was sentenced to six mouths' imprisonment On a charge of using improper language ou a tramcar, Percy Alfred Fabian was convicted and failed 205., and costs 255, and, on a further enaige of smoking in a tramway compartment not set apart for smolkefs, he was ordered to pay costs amounting to lls. l-'or leaving a vehicle unattended in Gray Street, David M'Comho was iined 105.,. and 7e costs, in default 4S hours' imprisonment I ' =====
