FLORAL FETE AT HASTINGS.
i A correspondent sends a very full nccount of. the' floral fete which was held last week on. tha Hastings racecourse in aid of tho Society fo# tho Health of Women and Children, which supports a Plunket- nurse in Hastings. Tho weather 'was -hot but delightful, ana - many workers gave their help enthusiastically. ' The motor-car/that won tho: first ;nrize was decor-! ated with a canopy pt purple Canterbury hells, and..the second was a mass of crimson Rambler; roses, while a third car that attracted, much notice was adorned.with ribbons and draperies ■in shades of mauve and purple, with purple Canterbury' beUs.';'Another car :■ was.- decorated with! the .leaves of /nativo flax only, with the'-exception of. a:Nativo mat: over its'Tb'onhet." Another- that : excited /great amusement held three Plunket babies of such' huge' dimensions . that one, iWondei-ed if they had been*fed -upon . Mr. :H. G. Wells's' "food of .■.tho gods."" When .three stalwart men emerged from the enveloping caps ' and gowns' the 'mystery was explained. - Some, of the decorated carriages were ■ very. good./ ' Miss -Marjorio.'Williams's carriage-'was' a mass of rich' scarlet and green, and she herself .wore, a costume to : match, which added greatly to the effect. Another had'a vivid, crimson bell dang-, ling from the top, and Miss Constance M'Lonn sat in a veritable bower of;.pink gsranium and matipo. Tho bicycle' taking first prize :.Was a clever. imitation of. an aeroplane, with - revolving ' fans// The. second,. a fine study in scarlet. Of tho decorated : dinner-tables; the one taking first prize had carnations and maidenhair fern; the second pale-pink sweet peas and the same -fern'. .' The. .Hastings Town . Band- and Mr. TombsV.String Band made music all through, the afternoon, and the latter gave a concert at 'th'e'-'tboatre; in . the evening, which /wis a great, treat';'to the packed' and enthusiastic audience. Half the profits from this concert are to go to the funds of the society forwhich the feta iwas 'got up. .'
