Mayor, Dr. Newman, said that: a num- .'; ber of streets.in Melrose were not 68 ieet wide, and 'the Bill proposed 'that. 'these private.;"■' streets, with tlio others, should'be-taken 1 over < by .the City Council. The land was hilly,' and the people, who wero mostly of the working class,- could -not spend auy money oh their '.:.'■ streets. It would,bo a great;hardship if these people, who paid rates just as did residents of public sticcte, could not:have improvements ' made which 1 would render the roads, passable lu winter. The City Council had received a' ; deputation from: the residents, but could not give any help.
