Garden Party at • thV Hutt. '<) :;' X : '\.}-'.- .;. ,; .. A glorious, day;-after a .'threatening evening was granted f or Mrs:. Clere's garden party al ■fllttckbridgo'on .Saturday. Although l hot in a ' high/degree in the sun tho "glebe" was by comparison delightfully. cool, owing to' tho shade cast-by the well-grown trees and the high-gabled-house. Tho garden, which is per- ' haps the oldest established-in the Hutt, beir,- ■ ns it was originally planted by the liov: Mr. Button, the first clorgyman of tho district, about ■-.siitr years ago,-was at its brightest and best, the lawns and shrubberits showing the prettiest green of the year. Though the roses woro unfortunately nearly over, tho garden .was'full of colour, .and. the scarlet-and ' cVimson, and yellow of the flowers combining with tho ever varying tints of the dresses o'f tho guests, as these latter, moved to arid fro in' the' shade and sunshine, made a scene which 'for'.'life" and brightness could, not : soon be forgotten. ' On the lawn, in the front of tho .house, was erected the maypole; decorated with wide' muslin, streamers in "red, white, andblue,;■ matching the sashes'of the pretty-little dancers. Tho complicated and charming evolution?, which were performed .twice, during 'the afternoon round this pole, .were perhaps the most.; appreciated. part of; the: amusements, and Miss Kingdon (who was the director) dc- ■ serves much praise for the trouble she must have taken in training the children. On the large, lawui .'croquet was played, in another ■ part of the grounds. "j)ing pong" /entertained the" Quests; while' in. a box-lined alley', archery : could'be practised. ; On a third lawn was a . large marquee,, where tea and Refreshments were dispensed)..small tables, set ■ "in embowered. nooks being scattered ; . round.; .In anl: other part, and. half, hidden by a rose-covered ' trellis;, was a mnch-patrbnised swing, and added to these bright sights was .the. charm, of'sweet mosic, supplied by the Vitstta Brbther's. Mrs. Clero, who wore a vieiK rose ehantnncr frock, with ,a. wide black hat, -was'. assisted by Mrs. ..' Yeats,. Mrs.'Malcolmsbn, Miss Cuo,'Miss Irene Bodmin,;';Miss Hewson.
