Mr. J. M. Johnston (President) occupied tho chair, and, in,moving the adoption of tho/report and balance-sheet/', gave 'a very, interesting; address, touching/on the recent financial depression, pointing out that : tho financial atmosphere had: cleared considerably, and tho outlook, was much brightor. He referred to the harnessing-of the district rivers for generating, oleotrio power, and to the groat 'bouefit to bo derived by the youth of the town,-and -district by,, the establishment of;a fine technical school in our,midst, cspcr cially, eulogising the work dono to secure .the' school; by: Mr. W. Riitherfurd, chairman of tho Board of Governors. In rcforring to tho efforts of the /chamber to-get tho: post office 'made :a' chief post' offico, : , Mr. Johnston quoted interesting figures, showing tho great; strides Avhich the town; is..making.' In his opinion, therd was nothing equal to it in any other part of,the Dominion':- Tho deposits in the local-post office'at the end of the'ifinancial year snowed an increase of. £Usfi2t. Money orders'issued amounted to J!30,152, an'increase, of over. X 5000; over the" previous -. year, '. and iEIO,OOO ' more'than- in l 1905. Outward letters numbered over two and a half millions, 100,000 more than tho ..previous year. Telegrams forwarded numbered VH9.807, an increase on tho year:pf;.l3,!)o9, whilo. there were equally .largo increases'in 'all other branches of. this service.
