. The/ harbeur has not for a very, long time S resented a prettier sight than it did on Satuvav afternoon last, preparatory to the starting of the P.N.Y.C. races. As a result of the light breeze everything, from the-dinghies and scows up to the big second-class yachts, crowded on all the 6ail they could carry, and to look at the harbour one would certainly say yachting was beginning to boom. However, it/was a dull afternoon-as far as racing was concerned, the wind being too light to/carry the beats around the course inside the time limit, 7 p.m. / The second-class race, which attracted seven starters, should have been an interesting one, more especially aa a recent importation from Auckland, the Wairere was starting off the scratch mark, and was : conceding such welltried.racers as the Janet and the Mahina 4min. time allowance. The White Heather, whiph is an unknown-quantity as far'as racing is concerned, appeared .to be liberally treated with a start of 6miri., I will be surprised if she gets in bo well after her first race in a fair treeze. ■■' ~ ■ The Wairere was worked by a portion of, the Siren's crew in Saturday's race. ; She made the best of the'light wind,: and moved off faster than any of her rivals. The White Heather - also seemed to get along well/although without enough wind to fill her mainsail properly. If the same field will turn out in a blow a good afternoon's racing should result. The Wairere will leave for _the Sounds on the Friday before Christmas.- It is 6tated that the Freyberg Bros, will take her across the' Strait. / / ;
The third-class boats were' in even a worse plight than the second-clas9 on- Saturday. . Mr. Bothamley's launch towed tho'Karaka and the ißawene back to the boat harbour and was greeted with cheers. when the tow-lino was cast off. Tho owner of the launchiin ques-, tion' was'as. keen a yachtsman as-;any. in the boat harbour up to three years ago, and _he has apparently / not forgotten . that sensationof being left a mile from bomo\ without any wind. The Lizzie, sailed by "Ted.", Bailey, was the 'only third-class boat which made a determined /effort to . get round: the course,, and his only.reward was a very late arrival home. , ';•:. , '• .-' The entries for the fourth-class races are: not very encouraging at present. Only three boats faced the/starter on Saturday, and two of these completed the course, but ■' ne - race.-: was declared as the journey -was not finished within the tiuie limit. Warehou; off scratch, reached tho 'finishing line at 7.20 p.m., and Tuna arrived about half an hour later. - - /Mr. J.'M'Lean's Waitangi came off the patent -slip last Menday,-and was tewed te: the beat harbour by Mr.' Grcenshield's launch. ,; She looks a picture ;after her recent overhaul, with; ber varnished'spars, and shining black sides. /A new 15.horse-power;has been;fitted into the 'Waitangi during- the 'season,'.'..".. V,' ■• . Mr. T.'Hannan's launch Swan was launched last Saturday. Mr, Hannan has put a lot of work into; his craft, and has practically re/built.her. '.:' ■ .'.The race for second, third, and.fourth-class •yachts, which was postponed last Saturday on' account of the wind dropping/ will; be resailed \ .this afternoon. .' •■ /. i . ■'■>-■■■• ■••■■ ' / ,The/.Te Aro Sailing Club hold their ; first race, of the season this afternoon.. The race s is for a -trophy presented by Mr, S. ;MTVilliams. Last Sunday turned out a beautiful day for/the yaohtsmeh, and mere .especially so for the launch-owners: Every boat that could carry , sail went out, some spending-the day in cruising, and others going to the different bays. The Siren found,the entrance a.suitablo place for sailing, and two or three more yachts spent l.the-day cruising about, the; entrance.-. Afoir sou'wester was blowing, in the morning, but this.died away to a flat calm.'wbich held until about four o clock, when it began to blow .from the east, this wind bringing most of the. yachts .home. .'■.;-;' / .
