WELLINGTON WOOL SALES.

' , FIRM TONE OF MARKET. < There was-a large attendance of. buyers at , the sale held .yesterday, and it was obvious j from tho -outset that they were, out to do ; business, for competition was keen from the ; Btart, especially for'crossbreds and haltbreds. . Coarse and medium crossbreds were in sellers' favour, Yorkshire representatives being mainly responsible, for tho slisht advance recorded. On the whole, some very good prices were obtained, and such prowers as preferred to market their wools locally in prcferonco to shipping to London: have no cause for complaint. Just-before tho sales commenced Mr. Walter Hill, on behalf of the buyers, protested against the manner in which wool was being taken in. long after tho time had expired at which the catalogues .ought, to have closed. Wool was being taken: ir. right up to Tuesday at midnight, -while tho catalogues should have closed on.Tuesday.morning. Mr. Hill maintained that under Buch circumstances buyers could not do justice to their. clients, nor yet to the Erowcrs. Continuing, Mr. Hill said that some of the wool appeared to havo been shorn in tho rain and rushed into the store, and, some hundreds of pounds, allowances ought to be-made for'the losses which would'accrue from thi3 cause. He had no hesitation in saying that some growers, were unscrupulous .enough to send:in their wool wet, in order to gain advantage in weight. He did not think it would be too much'for buyers to, ask - for : a guarantee that the woo! should arnvo Home in the condition in which it lift the Dominion—ho did not think some of it would. -■ Mr. Hordman (Dalgety and Company, Ltd.). *•?■ wa S. th ? fl . rst to.ascesd the rostrum, adI5 ltt ™"J n e snstico'.-of -the' comnlaints voiced bv -Jr - S? -~: . Murray,.Boberts, and Company. . - Messrs. Murray, Roberts, and Co. report as follows :-Ont of a total of 11,000 bales offered to-day, woi catalogued approximately 2000' bales. Our catalogno contained many choico parcels of both halfbred and crossbred wool,. the, average, however, being in slightly heavier condition than that offered at November sale. 'Prices for ; good-conditioned, well-skirted parcels wore, about on a par with last sale, while' ordinary, niodium : to-'de-Mao' croesbreds showed an advance of a fttrtlilaß to a-haUnanny. -The woolsi which-.were,

slow of sale, were those of a mixed character, badly classed, and. unskirtcd, but evon . for these prices showed if anything in sellers' favour, as compared with last sale. Pieces and bellies wore strongly hid for, anything of a clean character being bought at high figures. Wo secured tho highest prices of tho day in crossbreds and halfbreds, with a line of Bomnoy cross ewes from Waituna which sold at 131 d.; and a half bred of medium quality, fairly light in Rreaße, grown ir. the Pelonis Sounds district, at ■133 d. On the whole, the sale must bo described as one of tho most successful yet held in this market, most.of the lota offered being sold at tho auction. Messrs.'Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report as follows:—The second sale of tho series was held yesterday, when the total catalogues com--prising about 12,000 bales,,'were offered, of which we catalogued 1220 bales. Buyers were present in good numbers, and represented American. Home, and.Continental houses. A spirited salo resulted, although prices obtained for wool, which American operators were expected to keenly compete for, were rather disappointing, and were, fully Id. below rates ruling at the November sale. American buyers, through having a large selection of good wools offered them, were able to discriminate, and only paid November rates, and sometimes slightly better, for tip-top lines, with the .result that really good wools suffered, and receded in value to, the extent quoted above. It must also be remembered that the wool was heavier in .greano than at last month's offerings. On the other hand, wools taken by Bradford oporators sold splendidly, and prices, for this > quality wool showed an advance of 3d. to Id. per lb. • Pieces and bellies advanced id. per lb.
